Dating Sim Players Suspecting Their Facial Data Secretly Used For Research

Mobile gacha dating simulator Dream Chaser: Showbiz has been involved in a controversy over privacy data misuse. Players of the game suspect their facial data have been used for research purposes without their permission.

On Apr 17, 2022, the official Weibo of Dream Chaser: Showbiz posted a celebration for their game developer team, who won a prize in CVPR (an annual conference on computer vision). In their description, similar technology was implemented in the game as well. That announcement made many players worriedly believe their own facial data were used to train the AI program. Soon hundreds of angry comments were posted on Weibo questioning whether the development team had illegally misused their personal data.

It is a record of the facial recognition in Dream Chaser Showbiz which shows the game will track a player’s facial movement and reenact it on a virtual character.

Later that day, as a response to the angry players, the game’s Weibo posted another announcement claiming that all the data used in the award-wining research paper were collected from open datasets. They also emphasized that the game had not stored or collected any player facial data.

According to our dug-in, the research paper “One-shot Face Reenactment Using Appearance Adaptive Normalization” (released in 2021 by NetEase Fuxi AI Lab) uses the data from open datasets VoxCeleb1 and FaceForensics++.

However, the players were not assured. Though the paper was concluded before the game was released, there were still possibilities that player data were used to improve the AI afterward. People who did not play the game also shared their concerns about personal data security, urging NetEase to provide more convincing alibies.
