Since the last version of this “series” I wrote about a month ago was such a big hit (all 290 views of it – 25 of which I’m sure were just me), I thought I would give this at least one more go. My momma didn’t raise no quitter, after all. And besides, I think it’s important for gamers to expand their horizons beyond just one platform as I’ve never understood “console wars” and all that garbage. If there were good games to play on my stupid toaster oven, I’d play them that on that because that’s all I care about: good games – not what they are played on.
So, to reiterate: I’m going to keep things simple here – just a couple paragraphs in regard to what I like (or don’t like) about the game, and I’ll wrap it up by borrowing a gimmick from my two favorite critics of old by giving the game in question a thumbs up (👍) or a thumbs down (👎).
With all that said, here are the games I’ve been playing this past month…
Right out of the chute this game gave me goosebumps because its theme song sounds a great deal like the hypnotic theme from A Clockwork Orange which is one of my favorite movies (and favorite musical scores) of all time. Beyond that though, this game fires on all cylinders as it is an amalgam of A Clockwork Orange, Rollerball, and Jet Grind Radio. I’ve heard others say the Tony Hawk games are more of an influence here rather than JGR, but I played JGR before the Tony Hawk games, and the main character in Rollerdrome is on roller skates rather than a skateboard, so I feel JGR is more apropos as a comparison/influence.
Basically, you play as a character making their way through the ranks of the near-future (but observed through a very ‘70s lens) Rollerdrome league. It’s a game where you perform tricks for points while shooting the obstructing a-holes who populate the arena/skatepark. The more stylishly you can pull this off, the more points you get and the higher your Rollerdrome ranking will be. It really is just that simple…but, man, is it a lot of fun.
Rollerdrome gets an enthusiastic 👍 from me. Go play it. Now.
Sir Whoopass: Immortal Death is a game I should love. I soooo wanted to love it. I mean, it has a fantastic name, it looks like Skyrim, it plays like Diablo Immortal, and it has a wickedly black sense of humor on top of all of that.
But the one thing that Sir Whoopass doesn’t have is controller support…and in today’s day and age, that’s a full stop for me. I’m not going to sit here, mucking about for hours on end with a control scheme I haven’t used extensively since the early aughts on Half-Life 2, no matter how cool I think the game looks.
Here’s a tip from your Uncle Jer: I don’t care how “hardcore” you think you are, or if “it’s coming,” or whatever. DO NOT RELEASE A GAME WITHOUT CONTROLLER SUPPORT IN THE YEAR 2022.
If you haven’t guessed it by now Sir Whoopass: Immortal Death gets a big 👎 from me until the devs at Atomic Elbow get their act together and add the ability to use a controller.
This year’s Little League World Series is already in full swing, and while I typically love it, I can’t abide by how “professional” it’s all become – especially in terms of how it is broadcast. These are kids playing a kid’s game, no need for the statistics and analytics, pitch counts and launch angles, just let the kids play and have fun.
I must say that the video game version of the Little League World Series 2022 is a lot of fun – even though it does have a few quirks in its fielding and running mechanics. That being said, it’s nowhere near the “worst baseball game ever” as this clickbating ding-dong dubbed it. No, that title will forever and ever belong to Home Run on the Atari 2600, so that guy has no conception of what he is even talking about on any level.
The graphics are bright, colorful, and friendly. The always important hitting and pitching interface in Little League World Series Baseball 2022 is well done and a snap to figure out, and this experience also adds a few quicktime-event special moves (sliding into a base, scaling the wall to steal a home run, etc.) into the mix which adds some overall spice. Good stuff...and a definite 👍 from me.
The original Yars Revenge is easily one of the best games ever released on the Atari 2600 (funny then that I mention one of the worst a couple paragraphs above). I know it doesn’t look like much now, but back in 1981 this title was nothing short of a revelation and it came with a comic book explaining its “backstory” whatever the hell that was...something about the insect race of Yars seeking vengeance on their Qotile oppressors. I don’t know, it looked damn cool to 10-year-old Jer.
This new “recharged” version just came out a couple days ago, and I’ve been playing it non-stop since…on my Atari VCS even! With both mission-based and arcade game modes, Yars Recharged does a great job of enhancing the simple, risk-vs.-reward shooter gameplay that made the original Yars such a blast to play. Add in some slick graphics and a synth-heavy musical score (which sounds a good deal like the Rick and Morty theme) and color this retro gamer happy. In fact, I’m going to go play it again right now.
Another big 👍 from me for Yars Recharged.
💬 What games are you playing now? Let me know down in the comments, and if you’ve played any of the ones on this list, let’s hear your thoughts on them as well!
