Today’s Nintendo Direct Dropped Three Major Bombshells

Today’s Nintendo Direct Dropped Three Major Bombshells

20K View2022-09-14
So, today’s Nintendo Direct was quite the…thing. Since their inception a few years ago these announcement videos always seemed to me to be very hit-or-miss, as if The Big “N” was always toying with us – playing a coy game a “peekaboo” with their devoted fans.
Well, today wasn’t one of those days. Today was very much a hit. The three biggest reveals in this Direct being: The long-awaited sequel to best-selling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and new versions of the N64 classic, Goldeneye 007, for both the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox.

The biggest announcement is of course the reveal of the new Zelda sequel’s subtitle, Tears of the Kingdom, and its May 12, 2023 release date. The new trailer is suitably epic and shows off a bit of the game’s new flying mechanic on the back of a giant stone bird. Also it seems that the floating islands above Hyrule will now be explorable, adding to the verticality of this open world. Here’s hoping though that they do away with (or at least minimize) the cooking and the breaking weapons nonsense from Breath of the Wild as those two elements really took me out of that game.
I just wrote about the very Pikmin-inspired, Tinykin, just last week, so I find today’s announcement of Pikmin 4 rather serendipitous. This title began production in 2015 and has languished in development hell for the last six years, but now it seems Miyamoto-san has it back on track for a 2023 release…and that’s all the trailer reveals, really, is that Pikmin 4 is coming sometime in 2023. Color me stoked for more action in the backyard garden!

It seems that I can’t go a month or two these days without hearing some whispers about Goldeneye 007. I mean, the game came out in 1997, for Pete’s sake. Can’t we put this blocky polygonal baby to bed already? Apparently not, as two “new” versions are now “COMING SOON.” The Switch version appears to be just the N64 version, but with online play finally added. And the Xbox version seems to be the remastered, HD version that’s been kicking about since the Xbox 360 days, but was canceled for some nebulous reason (mostly to do with issues between Nintendo, Activision, and Microsoft’s licensing deal) back in the day.  Again, the trailer doesn’t show much here, other than the iconic Bond theme, the “floating circles” opening and, of course, that it’s “COMING SOON.” If I had to guess, the release date of both of these Bond titles would be sometime near the holidays of 2022.
A few other highlights that were announced for the Switch during this Direct are: Bayonetta 3, The Resident Evil Cloud series (which collects four games: Resident Evil VII, Resident Evil VIII: Village, and the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3), and Octopath Traveler II.

It looks like 2023 is shaping up to be a massive year for Nintendo and their legions of devotees. I've never considered myself the biggest Nintendo fanboy, but even I'm impressed by all that's coming next year...

Yes, I believe Bayonetta is coming at the end of October, but all the rest will see the light of day in 2023.

Hey Jerry! I'm not sure if you heard about this one or not, but there is an indie game called Agent 64 that is kind of like a spiritual successor of GoldenEye :D https://store.steampowered.com/app/1574480/Agent_64_Spies_Never_Die/

I lost all respect for nintendo, and their cudtomers, when they released the switch with a 4 year old out of date prototype tegra chip with massive security flaws and trash biild quality. Bad consumers enable bad companies to exist.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom (TOTK) Nintendo Switch
Nintendo has unveiled the final trailer for Zelda: TOTK and some excerpts from the game have been released, but what should we remember? 1: Graphics) The graphics have not evolved or changed very little but for a Nintendo Switch game of such magnitude, especially given the visual effects that the game will offer, it's already not bad 2: Powers) In this sequel to the hit game (Zelda BOTW) Link will have a glove that will allow him many more possibilities in the world of Hyrule including:
