Overwatch 2 is better than the first Overwatch, but it's not worth any praise just yet

I’ve played the first Overwatch for roughly three to four years. It was one of the games I played with my friends a lot, especially during the holidays. Every weekend in the summertime, I’d pack my computer, mouse, and tangled charger cables, all to bring to my friend’s house to play the game for the entire night. For the first two years, these game nights felt blissful. But after the first Overwatch started slowly receiving fewer and fewer updates and becoming unpopular, my interest in playing started to lessen. Eventually, my friend decided to stop playing, and so did I.
After leaving the first Overwatch, my friend and I started drifting apart. Despite this, my love for the game didn’t fade. I had always hoped the game would marvelously return and become popular again, maybe in the form of another character debuting or a massive update, including an entirely new map to relish.

And luckily, my wish came true in November 2019. When Blizzard Entertainment announced Overwatch 2, I was ecstatic to know the endless possibilities of what could become of the game. Eventually, time caught up, and after three years of waiting, the game officially launched last October 4, 2022, across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
When Overwatch 2 launched, I can embarrassingly admit that I stayed awake until early morning just to play the game ahead of everyone else. Well, that’s what I originally thought would happen.
After opening the game, I was met with login issues and server disconnections and ended up not playing for the entire day. Although Blizzard Entertainment was trying to fix these issues, which were the cause of DDoS attacks, I felt pretty disheartened to play. I mean, I had already waited three years, but now I had to wait longer? It just wasn’t a pleasant experience.
That said, Overwatch 2 eventually became playable over the next few days. I still had some bitterness about the game’s launch, but I was determined to move past the rocky start if it meant I could finally play Overwatch 2. In saying so, I also had no idea what the game had installed or if it was any different from the first Overwatch. I was basically at level one again, and in some way, it felt quite thrilling and daunting.

After finally logging into the game last Tuesday, I was surprised to see Overwatch 2’s menu and interface remain almost unchanged, with only a few tweaks to make it look different. The game had three new characters called Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko, but none of these additions caught my eye.
I was more intrigued by the new modes and maps and the fact that Overwatch 2’s gameplay focused on a five-versus-five format rather than the previous six-versus-six. I think this change completely altered Overwatch 2’s gameplay in the way that having fewer tanks meant quicker battles but made a lot more room for teams to play closer together and conceptualize tactics. It also allowed me to carry more games without feeling burdened by the overwhelming odds of going against six opposing players, like in the first Overwatch.

In saying so, it’s hard to pinpoint my feelings about Overwatch 2 after playing for many hours on end, especially considering that its major hook being a PvE mode, won’t be arriving until 2023. So, in some way, I feel like I haven’t experienced all of the game just yet. That said, I don’t think, from what I’ve played, there’s much to praise about the game’s state right now. Overwatch 2 is definitely better than the first Overwatch. Still, I don’t think I needed to wait three years to receive some newer features that could’ve been implemented over time through major updates much earlier on in the first game.
Does that mean Overwatch 2 isn’t worth playing at all? Not at all. The game is free-to-play now, with newer players required to play games to unlock characters. It’s also extremely enjoyable, and the gameplay feels much more dynamic, fast-paced, and perplexing. There's a much wider range of characters to play, and the plenty of maps and modes make playing Overwatch 2 feel refreshing. And although Overwatch 2 might not be something I was expecting, I'm still somewhat glad it feels close to the game I relished with my friend ages ago.
💬 Have you played the first Overwatch or Overwatch 2? If so, what's your favorite character to play and why?

lets just hope they did learn their mistake on hero balancing, cuz of that alone the game become almost dead, even its Esports got so miniscule to the point of it stops entirely.
