Preparing for Sonic Frontiers with a trip down memory lane

41K View2022-10-21
We can all agree Sonic the Hedgehog is a massive property, but Sonic has always held a unique place in my video game learning history. In fact, it was the first game title I ever owned. I would say getting Sonic was one of the most memorable birthday presents I ever received and put me on the path to becoming the ardent gamer you see before you today. As my birthday soon approaches and the high-speed Sonic Frontiers release is just around the corner, I think it's the perfect time for a trip down Sonic memory lane.

The year was 1991, and the console wars were an all-out slugfest! Sega needed a slogan and mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Hence, "Genesis does what Nintendon't" was crafted, and Sonic the Hedgehog was introduced to the world. Kid me had no idea about the blood feuds and rivalries between Nintendo and Sega... I just wanted to play freaking Sonic!
And then it happened. Gift wrapped in shiny paper was the catalyst that would turn me into a lifelong gamer Sonic the Hedgehog. I mean, what can be said that hasn't already been said about this game? It was awesome! The visuals, the high-speed gameplay, the soundtrack. The Sonic character was a cocky badass, and even Nintendo fans had to do a double-take. I was hooked when I started at Green Hill Zone and could make Sonic run and bounce all around on those spring things.

Okay, sure... there have been some real stinkers that have come out of the Sonic franchise. Games we would all like to imagine never existed, but for the most part, the series, which includes TV shows and movies has remained solid and is still a flagship of the sega franchise even after they stopped making consoles.
So, what can we expect from Sonic Frontiers? A stinker or something brilliant? Well, if the trailer is any indication, the visuals and CGI are pretty impressive. That line of dialogue in the cinematic, from the new baddie, "your reckless actions endangers the world," might be pretty interesting narrative-wise. I'd like to see them get a bit deeper into the philosophical aspect of Sonic. Are his actions really endangering the world somehow? Or is this new baddie just an Eggman replacement? The open zone gameplay, side quests, and level design all seem promising, and there's even a skill tree system.
So, all these years later, I'm still talking about Sonic, and with this new release, I'm probably not going to shut up any time soon. And with the  November 8th release date right around the corner, it certainly looks like the franchise still has some gas in the tank. Maybe it's time to add another item to my bday wish list.
