Chasing the tale of the Baba Yaga – Blacktail Quick Review

PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it for sure. Especially if you are fascinated by mythology as I am.Blacktailhas its strengths which are its unique world structure and a fascinating story. The 2D animated cutscenes are a cool departure from the fairly standard gameplay, but it does have a couple issues in regard to repetition and some technical wonkiness. Still, Blacktail drew me in because I appreciate the unusual world and got into the story of the girl hidden behind the mysterious mask.
TIME PLAYED
I played Blacktail for approximately four hours which seems to be about the halfway point through this experience...if going by the world map is any indication.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• The cool enchanted forest vibe. The world presented in Blacktail is so strange, hostile, and intriguing that it begged me to challenge it, as if this forest itself was the true villain of the game. The world map may not appear vast at the outset, but it holds secrets-a-plenty. I wandered its wild spaces and paths with great care. And on top of that, it all looks rather majestic.
• Engaging narrative. From my perspective, this seems to be a prequel-style origin story for the mythological witch, Baba Yaga. But that assumption became less and less clear as the game unfolded, which, of course, only drove me forward to find out more.
• Animated sequences. Memories recovered by Yaga are viewed in 2D, quasi- psychedelic animated sequences in which I learned about the girl's past and experienced what she experienced. These sequences provide a certain dose of freshness to the more repetitive aspects of Blacktail.
WHAT SUCKS
• Repetitious crafting. It’s frustrating when I constantly have to stop to fashion more arrows to replenish my meager supply. It feels like the game is punishing me for not stopping every three seconds to grab more feathers or sticks to make more arrows. Just let me find a goddamn quiver and be done with it. Jeez.
• A bit glitchy. Blacktail’s issues go beyond a few framerate stutters here and there. At one point, I ran across a mini-boss in a cave, and during the battle it decided to sink into the ground…and then it was trapped. I could still see its health bar, but couldn’t attack it or kill it. I was stuck in that battle until I reloaded/reset the game.
