Cyberpunk grind rails are the best part of Fortnite's new season

It's that time again! On Friday, Epic Games launched the latest big update to Fortnite, titled Chapter 4 Season 2: Mega. This is the first new season for the popular battle royale game in 2023, since Chapter 4 started way back in December 2022. While the wait was long, Epic has added some pretty great additions to the game.
While smaller changes have been made throughout the Chapter 4 map, the biggest shift in Season 2 is the addition of a full-on cyberpunk city in the southeastern portion of the map. This is Mega City, a futuristic environment that stands in stark contrast to the medieval fantasy theming of much of the rest of the map. The areas surrounding Mega City also have a distinct Eastern theme that's very cool and, again, feels fresh compared to anything we've seen in Fortnite recently.
But the best part of Mega City? The real reason to load up Chapter 4 Season 2 and jump into battle royale? Yeah, that would be the grind rails pictured above.
Mega City has several different grind rails that weave through the city at different levels. The rails glow neon, and once you hop on, you have some degree of control over your speed and momentum. However, you'll need to balance that with aiming and taking down opponents, with the grind rails offering a vantage point that competitors may not realize they need to beware.
While I wasn't sure at first whether these grind rails would appeal to me, the game wisely pushed me to try them. One of the early quests for this season required grinding rails in Mega City and shooting some practice targets in the area. And as soon as I hopped on, I was hooked.
If you've ever played any of the classic PlayStation platforming series Ratchet & Clank, then you'll have some idea what to expect here. Zooming around the fantastic heights of Mega City was exhilarating, and I was stoked to discover that I could leap off of one rail high in the air and land on a different rail below and just keep my slide going. And while shooting down enemies while moving along the rails is challenging, I found it to be immensely satisfying—not to mention, it makes it difficult for enemies to fight back as well.
Of course the grind rails aren't all that's new in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2. Among various weapon vaultings and reintroductions, Epic has also added in the new "Rogue Bike," a two-person sports bike pictured above. These bikes are fast and maneuverable, and having a buddy join on the back helps with survivability a lot. And did I mention it can Akira slide? Yeah, it can Akira slide.
We'll see if the novelty of rail grinding carries me along through the whole of Season 2, but this update couldn't have come at a better time. I was just starting to feel pretty burnt out and bored with the Chapter 4 Season 1 map, but for now I'm loving this new stuff and can't wait to play more.
