While many anime and manga-based mobile games are a dime a dozen, The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross is considered by many to be a standout. Like many in its genre, players battle, try to get the characters they want via a Gacha system, and make these characters stronger. But what makes this particular game so special to critics? I decided to find out and tried the game myself.
The first thing I noticed about this game was that like most character collecting games, it recreates the story of the anime, with some additions. However, unlike many of them, they don't retell the story with a visual novel format of just texts popping up from under the characters, but actually featuring full cutscenes with complete animations. Heck, given how bad the anime is animated in the later seasons, I could even say that the game's animations are actually better than the anime itself! And if you've watched the anime already, knows what happens next, or just want to move on and start playing, you can always skip these cutscenes.
Another aspect that is quite fun is the character customization, where you can change the looks of existing characters. This is not unique to the game at all, but somehow, the customization options for Grand Cross is way better than other anime-based games. However, players still have to work to get these customizations and purchase them with in-game Diamonds. There are also paid Diamonds, but in my opinion, there's nothing much that sets them apart, so the pay-to-win aspect ain't really that big.
As for battles, there's a rock-paper-scissors elemental strengths vs. weakness system in place. It's fairly standard for turn-based RPG. And like many mobile RPGs, there's a full auto mechanic that lets your characters fight as they please as the AI takes over. However, there is a slight deviation from many in its genre, as characters can take up stances, such as Meliodas being able to go into Full Counter stand. Oh, and the visuals do look amazing. There is also a degree of skill in the game, as this is where the rock-paper-scissors elemental strengths vs. weakness system shines through. This means that players have to maximize what they can do with characters with an elemental advantage while minimizing what their characters with an elemental disadvantage can do.
In addition, players can combine the same cards they have drawn in battle if they come up next to each other. This would make attacks a lot stronger. The game also allows players to combine cards manually, but they lose one of their three combat slots, which makes strategizing what to do in your turn all the more important. So yes, there is an idle gaming system in place, but if you want to go into PVP, you have to strategize, which means mastering the system by not playing by the automatic battle system most of the time. That being said, I found the combat system very easy to learn, but it would take some time to master.
Players are also required to gather resources, though I must admit that Grand Cross's resource gathering system is a bit standard and nothing really special. Players go on missions to gather resources, and these cost stamina so you have a limited number of times you can go on missions. Of course, you can take stamina potions to recover stamina. But basically, this is what other games are also doing, it's pretty meh.
That being said, the stamina management is very good. There is a gacha system in place, and it's fairly mediocre. However, the stamina system makes up for it, as you can exchange duplicate characters and turn them into stamina.
The Good:
The game is beautiful and the combat system is very well made. Character customization is also great, and it does not feel pay-to-win at all. The game also has full cutscenes which recreate the anime, instead of just dialogue with texts. The stamina system is also very well managed, as players can find many ways from recovering stamina.
The Bad:
While much of the game really does stand out, I felt that the resource gathering system and events are pretty standard. It's like they are just there. However, these do not diminish the game, but felt that the developers could have done better.
There are also some reports of some technical issues. The game is pretty heavy on the graphics admittedly, so do expect some lags or have your screen frozen from time to time. While expected, these are still frustrating. Sometimes, it also takes time to load.
Final Verdict:

But while there are some technical issues, and some parts of the game which could be better, the game is still very much excellent. It's a cut above other anime-based mobile RPG games with a complicated battle system and excellent customization. This game is very very very VERY good!
