Contra Returns Game Review: A modern reimagining of the cult platformer
Contra Returns is an updated game that you'll notice right away. The visual style, main menu (interesting little detail: physically moving your phone on the main menu moves the background behind your character a little utilizing your phone's gyroscopic powers), and everything else appears completely different from the traditional edition, but guess what? It's 2021, and we've come a long way from those days, so it's understandable. However, the game then ties you up in a chair and forces you to eat.
Until the tutorial is completed, players are unable to change any settings or explore anything. It's just a matter of completing the game's levels. You can't even change the settings if the volume isn't right! The gameplay is identical to that of the original Contra, but with improved graphics and new high-tech foes. To be honest, the game does not feel like the original, and the nostalgia element does not soar to a high level.
With new game types, you may team up online and compete in real-time
The game has the iconic badass characters Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, the two-man army, as well as new characters, weaponry, and other in-game objects. The original Contra was just pure action, but this version incorporates all of the characteristics of modern FPS games on the market. It's disputed if this is a good or terrible thing.
Contra has amazing aesthetics and decent controls, but IAPs strike back.
The game's graphics are adequate, and the aesthetic update is noticeable. The game's soundtrack is identical to the original, which brings back memories, however, the voice acting isn't great and doesn't sound real.
Although the game's controls are adequate, there is a major flaw in the game. So far, there hasn't been any controller support. Contra is a game that has been played with a controller by almost everyone who has played it. However, they are unable to do so for Contra Returns, which should be included in the near future. The user interface is also rather good, albeit there are a few flaws. There is no volume control, only an on/off switch, for example.
The game now lacks the advertisements that Konami and TiMi are known for. However, it contains a lot of in-app purchases and is Pay to Win to some level, which hurts the multiplayer component. Diamonds can be bought with real money and then used to upgrade your in-game stuff. It's concerning that a classic game has been remastered with in-app purchases that give players an unfair advantage.
Final Verdict
Contra Returns is an excellent game on the verge of being great. However, it doesn't feel like it's bringing back an old game or evoking nostalgia. It appears to be a game with some components taken from other games, but with much too many in-app payments. That, along with the lack of controller compatibility, where the game's main flaws, since it seemed like any other modern title, but the original Contra game was a game that stuck in gamers' memories and was pure action.►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►
