Touhou LostWord Game Review: Fans of the Touhou franchise will like this all-in-one package
Take an adventure with the Touhou characters
Without a question, Touhou LostWord is a game for Touhou franchise fans first and foremost. The game takes you on a journey through the Touhou universe with a cast of individuals from all walks of life. You can give yourself a name and a protagonist to connect with characters you've known since childhood. While the game's premise isn't original, it is lighthearted, and if you let yourself get lost in the colorful characters and don't take it too seriously, you might fully enjoy it.The story is delivered through static images of the characters that the game manipulates to represent emotions such as bouncing up and down and violent trembling. The figures have a few distinct minor animations in the face, as well as completely fresh images for a wide range of emotions and actions, thanks to such a simple technique.
Engage in turn-based warfare with your team
Touhou: Lost Word's fighting is a turn-based RPG, so if you've played a gacha RPG before, the battle shouldn't be too unfamiliar. The developers drew inspiration from the franchise's bullet-hell roots by employing the same types of barren backgrounds found in early games. They also stay true to the source material by making the character's assaults look like standard bullet hell maneuvers, including designating attack kinds as concentrate shots or spread shots.
The scenery and music in the cutscenes are breathtaking
Music is included in each level and cutscene, and the tunes are well-crafted pieces by both independent and professional artists. Even as an outsider, you can appreciate the effort made to please its supporters because the game is merely a fan project. If you're really into someone's work, the art in the game always has tags for the artist, so you can google them if you're really into their work.
Apart from providing a more holistic experience, the music and images appear to be used to promote other artists and musicians while also broadening the Touhou franchise's reach. Many corporations utilize games as a way to expand their fan base, but this is the first time we've seen a game go above and beyond to serve its fans.
Final Verdict
Touhou Lost Words is a fantastic game... for Touhou enthusiasts. While we don't rule out the possibility that new fans of the franchise will enjoy this game, we don't believe you are the intended demographic. When it comes down to it, the game is rather generic and doesn't do anything to differentiate itself from other gacha RPGs with gorgeous girls in terms of gameplay. While I enjoy the story in games, it's difficult to deny that most people don't read the story in mobile games. Keep this in mind as you consider our final score for the game.
