🌸 Afterimage: The "Everything Everywhere All At Once" of Metroidvanias
Afterimage is an exercise in sheer, unadulterated ambition. Developed by Aurogon Shanghai, it doesn’t just want to be a Metroidvania; it wants to be the biggest one you’ve ever played. It’s a game that offers a feast for the eyes but sometimes bites off more than the player can chew.
🎨 Visuals: A Hand-Drawn Masterpiece
If you’re looking for "Eye Candy," this is the pinnacle. The world of Engardin is staggering.
Art Direction: Every frame looks like a high-budget anime concept board. From the sun-drenched Emerald Falls to the gothic, brooding towers of the late game, the hand-drawn aesthetic is flawless.
Variety: Unlike many indies that reuse assets, Afterimage features over 15 massive, distinct biomes, each with unique lighting and environmental storytelling that rivals Hollow Knight.
⚔️ Combat & RPG Systems: Depth or Drowning?
The combat is where the "Peak Reviewer" finds the meat of the game. It’s snappy, fluid, and surprisingly deep.
Weapon Variety: You aren't just stuck with a sword. You have Scythes, Katanas, Greatswords, Dual Blades, and Whips. Each has its own move-set and "Afterimage" (ability) upgrades.
The Skill Tree: It is massive. It’s more Final Fantasy than Metroid, allowing for genuine build expression. You can play as a glass-cannon spellcaster or a tanky brawler.
Elite Enemies & Bosses: With over 170 enemy types and 30+ bosses, the variety is "Elite." The bosses are spectacular screen-filling spectacles that require genuine pattern recognition and "Souls-like" patience.
🗺️ World Design: The "Sprawling" Conundrum
This is where the review gets honest: Engardin is too big.
The Map: It is gargantuan. Exploration is rewarding because there are secrets everywhere, but the "backtracking" can become a chore. It’s a game that respects your curiosity but occasionally disrespects your time.
Sense of Direction: It’s a "pure" Metroidvania, meaning it doesn't hold your hand. You will get lost. For some, this is peak immersion; for others, it’s a source of frustration.
📜 Story & Localization: The Weakest Link
While the lore is deep (involving gods, "The Razing," and amnesiac protagonists), the delivery is messy.
Confusing Narrative: The story is told through jargon-heavy dialogue and "word salad" that can be hard to follow due to some awkward translation choices.
Character Development: Renee is a serviceable lead, but her companion, Ifree, can be polarizing (some find the voice acting a bit grating). You’re here for the world and the gameplay, not necessarily the script.
🏆 Final Verdict
"Afterimage is a 40-hour epic in a genre that usually lasts 15. It is beautiful, mechanically tight, and aggressively large."
The Good: Breathtaking art, some of the best combat variety in the genre, and a scale that feels truly "grand."
The Bad: It overstays its welcome for some, the story is convoluted, and certain RPG elements feel like bloat.
Score: 9.1/10 — A must-play for Metroidvania veterans, but a daunting mountain for newcomers.
