A mother posted her story of playing Animal Crossing with her daughter and lit up Chinese social media. We asked for her permission to adapt this heartwarming story of love to English and share it with you here:
I recently started playing Animal Crossing.
My daughter and I have separate accounts, but we only had one switch, so we had to share the same island.
At first, I didn’t realize we were on the same island. I booted up the game, set everything up, and played for two days. In the beginning, all I wanted to do was grind for some cash. I collected all the branches and seashells I could find and sold everything for bells, the in-game currency.
Getting new dresses and shoes never crossed my mind, and the only distraction for me was one time when an animal neighbor gave me a bag of flower seeds as a gift. I planted it in front of my shabby tent.
My island was crawling with weeds. Everything that couldn’t fit in my inventory just lay on the ground. It was empty of anything except the tools for my advancement; I was drowning in the illusion of my ‘wealth’ growing.
On the third day, my daughter came online.
She played the game for a while and came to me.
“Mom,” she said, “we’re on the same island! I live in this red tent right next to you. I made a backpack with a snowflake on it, it’s so cute! And I received a gift from my neighbor, a metronome. I put it in my tent, do you want to see it?”
“And mom”, she said, “you can make a leaf umbrella, but I can’t make one right now, I don’t have the crafting recipe. What a pity, how lovely it would be to walk in the rain with a leaf umbrella in my hands.”
Then she went off to do her homework.
I logged back into the game on my account. Everything feels different now.
I found my daughter’s tent and was a bit surprised by the fact that I could actually go in and see that lovely metronome right beside the wall. Her little bed was as shabby as mine, and I couldn’t help thinking of her sleeping on it, like the little angel she always was. I wanted to leave something as a gift, but when I opened my backpack, there was nothing but branches, cobblestones, and bells.
Well, I guess I’ll just leave some bells then.
I carefully separated 100 bells from the treasure stack I worked so hard on. It couldn’t be placed in my daughter’s tent, so I came out and placed it right next to the tent entrance. Then I realized her tent was surrounded by weeds, just like mine.
Looks like mom is going to help you do some house cleaning again. I thought.
The tent looks a bit jarring and empty. Maybe I should help her plant some flowers too? I went back to my tent and brought half of my pansies to her place.
While I was on my daily trip to sell my branches and rocks to the shop, I remembered the leaf umbrella she mentioned. She told me I had the recipe, but I never made one. Anything other than tools for fishing and mining felt irrelevant and useless to me.
But my daughter said it would be lovely and wanted one. Well, I guess I should probably try to make one then?
I made the leaf umbrella. It’s a very big piece of green leaf and my character walking while holding it did look very, very cute indeed.
I brought this giant leaf to my daughter’s tent and placed it right next to the bunches of pansies. She must have loved it when she next logged in.
Maybe there were other things she wished to have? Maybe I should leave some more bells, 100 is not that much after all.
So I left another 1000 bells.
For the next two hours, I was collecting fossils, bugs, and fish like crazy. I hoped I could build a museum as soon as possible. It was not that of a big deal for me, but what a big surprise it would be for my daughter when she came back next time.
The next day, I collected all the creatures needed for the museum. My daughter told me I could buy a diving suit, so I did and caught more precious creatures, including some lobsters and a Dungeness crab.
After my diving trip, I went to my daughter’s tent again and left her a sea anemone, a sweet shrimp, and a football fish.
Sea anemones have such dreamy colors; she must love them. Sweet shrimp may not be the most valuable catch, but it’s her favorite seafood. My daughter told me she was never able to catch a football fish, and she just wanted to see how a shiny-tailed fish would look.
The day after that, I bought more flower seeds. I planted them outside my tent, outside my daughter’s tent, and everywhere I could think of.
I took care of all the weeds on the island.
When I was shaking trees that day, a new piece of furniture fell down. It was honey and milk on a plate. I brought my new possession to my daughter’s tent and left them next to the flowers. I also left three cherries there, so she would know mom made her breakfast.
I went to the shore to do some more fishing and found a pair of striped socks. She must be catching so many fish, that she can’t keep this in her backpack. What a terrible place to leave your socks, darling. I let go of one of my catches and put her socks in my backpack.
It was late at night. I was on my way home along the shore, with a pack full of fish and a pair of my daughter’s socks. That was the moment I heard the sound of the waves, warm and tranquil.
The world used to be a lonely wasteland, but now we are blessed with this miracle of love.
