i loved that the game returned to the "metroidvania" style of exploration. finding keys, managing a tiny inventory, and deciding whether to use my last few bullets or run for my life felt like classic resident evil. it made every resource feel precious and every save room feel like a genuine sanctuary. even as my favorite game, i can admit it isn't perfect. there were two main areas where i felt the experience lost a bit of its momentum.
the bakers are iconic, the standard enemies. the molded got a bit repetitive. by the halfway point, i knew exactly how to handle them, and the lack of diverse creature designs made the combat feel a little shallow compared to the stellar boss fights.
the transition from the intricate, puzzle-filled mansion to the more linear, action-heavy salt mines felt a bit rushed. i wished the deep exploration and environmental storytelling of the first two-thirds had carried all the way to the credits. resident evil 7 rescued a dying franchise by stripping it down to its core: fear. it’s a masterpiece of tension and art direction. even if the enemy variety was thin and the ending felt a bit straightforward.
