WH40K games are many, however the opportunity to be grand is seldom, only coveted by a mere few in their otherwise extensive catalogue on mobile.
In the case with Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus we have a top tier mobile games developer taking hold of the IP and Snowprint Studios have crafted something really neat.
Tacticus plays out as a X4 hex based game with a lick of polish to give it the frills we've come to expect in 2021 from X4 games. A go-to example of a modern WH40K hex based game would be WH40K Gladius by Slitherine.
The Tacticus campaign delivers a nice intro to the universe, pitting us in the power armour of a space marine brother of the Ultra smurfs, the chapter Librarian. Other characters join the squad throughout the tutorial and this rounds out the complement with a battle sister, a marine in terminator armour, and a scout.
The action animations are excellent, the sound files pack a punch too. For a mobile title I was surprised at how intuitive the controls worked for a strategy game. Additionally the use of skills as special attacks are best utilised when clearing the field from mobs of heretic filth.
While the story is generic it is by no means pure vanilla. The Necrons are a formidable opponent who are tricky the further you progress. There is No auto play function, thank the Emperor, it's pure brawn and brains as you out wit the AI opponent.
I'm still early game but I desperately wanted to share my thoughts as the team at Snowprint Studios are about to launch another round of Beta. It's out in the Philippines on the PlayStore and if you're in the region you can download it today.
I plan to play this for a while as I'm a 40k fan and this is definitely my jam. As I said it's still early game for me and so far it's all PvE and AI driven gameplay. I haven't seen any P2W elements as yet and if my game experience changes and the game offers more than what I've currently seen I'll be sure to update my review.
Right now I'm completely comfortable giving this a 4 star rating. And as a closing thought it's great to see the WH40K franchise finally get a really good game without following a cut n' paste approach to the game development, I've experienced a few too many that simply re-skin over an otherwise standard gametype.
This is not the case for WH40K Tacticus, as this is something sweet and unique and is well worth your time playing.
