No wonder Easter eggs are so appealing to us: they not only testify to the ingenuity and creativity of the developers, but also allow us to join the select group of gamers who actually know about these secrets. The more popular a game, the greater the temptation to elicit its mysteries - and for the foreseeable future there is unlikely to be a bigger street sweeper than Fortnite. There are also a number of Easter eggs hidden in Epic's Battle Royale shooter. Some of them are comparatively well-known, others should be new even for die-hard fans. Or are you trying to tell us that you already knew each of the following secrets?
1. The hidden hatch from Lost
If you roam the northeastern part of the Wailing Woods, sooner or later you will stumble upon a suspicious but indestructible hatch that doesn't want to fit in with the rest of the forest at all. Epic is very likely alluding to the Lost series here. A similar hatch plays a central role there and has been stylized by fans over time to become a cult object. Accordingly, there are numerous references to the secret hideout in pop culture, also and especially in video games. Fortnite is by no means the first game to refer to the hatch. She has previously appeared in Just Cause 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the Wrath of the Lich King expansion from World of Warcraft and - of course - also in the Easter egg slingshot GTA 5 .

2. Epic pays tribute to what is arguably the most famous Fortnite rescue of all time
Now, due to its crazy gameplay, Fortnite is admittedly constantly producing funny scenes and funny situations. One of the most famous, however, is an equally failed and entertaining rescue operation by Youtuber Muselk. Coincidentally, he spotted a poor fellow of a player who had fallen at the edge of the map and was now stuck there until the storm would inevitably catch him at some point. But instead of abandoning the guy to his fate or shooting him down from a safe distance, Muselk started his rescue operation and built a huge stair construction into the depths. However, when attempting to drive a golf cart down to pick up the other player, the cart slipped, rolled over a few times - and accidentally kicked the person to be rescued over the edge of the map into the water. Needless to say, the clip went viral and apparently caught on with the developers themselves. A few days later, they erected a tombstone at the spot where Muselk's rescue operation failed.
3. A "Transformer" north of Paradise Palms
If you follow the only road leading north from Paradise Palms until you finally leave the dusty desert behind you and stand on lush grass again, you will find a meter-high figure on the left side of the first intersection. Despite his imposing appearance, the guy made up of cars does not pose any danger - quite unlike the Transformers, to which Epic Games alludes very clearly here.

4. Posters from Epic's previous games
Of course, the developers insisted on immortalizing themselves in the game in one way or another. Therefore, you can find various posters from previous Epic games all over the game world. For example, the top motif of the images below depicts the Jazz Jackrabbit jump-and-run series, which spawned two installments between 1994 and 1997 (the lead developer in both cases, incidentally, was Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski). On the lower poster, however, you can see the Facing Worlds map from Unreal Tournament.

5. The crashed school bus
Okay, admittedly: The purple llamas will remain the Fortnite mascot for all eternity. Hot on their heels is the iconic school bus, which players use to fly across the map at the start of each round and from which they eventually jump. You know this vehicle as a reliable means of transportation, but it's not without flaws, as a crashed specimen northeast of Shifty Shafts proves. At the crash site you will find chests, loot llamas, weapons and the now limp balloon. The bus itself, on the other hand, was surprisingly little affected. Nevertheless: Not a pretty sight, the whole thing.

6. The Stuck Garden Gnome
A wacky and rare Easer-Egg: If you build a stone wall, there is a 1:10,000 (!) chance that you will find a garden gnome wedged between the individual bricks. However, the dwarf, which is usually found primarily in German front yards, does not affect the stability of the wall, which still has over 300 hitpoints. By the way, this is the same kind of garden gnome that you already had to collect as part of various weekly challenges.

7. A huge footprint
In the south-western corner of grid square B6 you stumble across a huge footprint, and we'd rather not even get to know the associated monster. The beast has apparently stomped through a house, the remains of which can be found left and right. You have been able to discover the deepening there for some time, which is why it has long been the focus of numerous theories. Especially when switching from season 4 to 5, some players expected that the footprint would play a decisive role - but that was not the case. It is still not clear whether there is a secret behind this find that Epic will reveal in the future. But the imprint is always cool.

8. Durr Burger and Tomato Head rearview mirror tags in golf cart
The cool golf carts were one of the major innovations in Season 5. Almost every player should have gotten behind the wheel of such a box. However, if you don't look closely, you will quickly overlook a small Easter egg inside the vehicle: two small Durr Burger and Tomato Head figures are dangling where the rear-view mirror would normally be. Strictly speaking, Epic has hidden another reference with the three-stage drift mechanism. This is in fact taken almost unchanged from the Mario Kart games. Even the color of the sparks is similar to that of Nintendo's fun racer.

9. A working speedometer
If you've always wondered how fast the characters run in Fortnite or what the top speed of a golf cart is, you can easily find out. Just go to the horizontal road south of Paradise Palms. Head east toward the bridge there and you'll spot a working speedometer on the left (suitably right next to a police car). Depending on the speed at which you move past it (even if you are thrown away by an explosion), the device will display your speed. Note, however, that this is not km/h, but miles per hour.

10. The Fortnite puzzle in "real life"
It's kind of a tradition for Epic Games to celebrate the start of a new season with a lot of excitement. However, immediately before the start of Season 5, the developers came up with something very special: a worldwide real-life puzzle. To do this, the studio hired paid actors and sent fans on an elaborate scavenger hunt. In addition, the famous llamas appeared almost simultaneously in several cities such as Cologne, London and Paris. Here you can read what the Fortnite puzzle is all about .
