INTRO

Genshin Impact is a lot like BotW. Shocker, ik. But honestly, if you take out the entire gacha mechanic, it's basically BotW, less detailed, different mechanics, with aspects of other popular MMOs. Based on solely the game itself, I'd recommend anyone who liked BotW's take on exploration to give it a go.

WORLD

What about the good bits? The world is pretty damn phenomenal. It's not very graphically intensive, but the art style still manages to make it look beautiful, just like the soft shapes and vibrant colors that BotW is famous for. The music is similarly phenomenal. Nothing more to say on those points.

STORY

The story is a matter of preference. The lore is pretty deep, but is also not apparent, and is buried at a similar depth within walls of text that you probably won't read as you play the game. The most lore you'll probably ever imbibe is lore given to you through cinematics, of which there are few. The active story is interesting, but does not exhibit the same consistent excellence that BotW does. Some quests are wonderful and thought provoking, some are on the level of AC trailing quests. Usually, the important characters are well built, but when you have so many, it becomes hard to bring out everyone.

GAMEPLAY

Which brings us to the characters and combat themselves. Great visual design, the combat feels like a pretty satisfying hack and slash with some technique to it if you really care about clear times, but even the most unskilled player can button mash their way through most of the content. Do not expect it to be as fun as BotW, where every conflict required your attention, because similar to Warframe, after a certain point in Genshin, you start to looks for the easiest way to quickly get through content because there's no challenge and you just want the rewards.

CO-OP

What about co-op? It's very limited in that only four people can play together at a time, much like Warframe. Usually, co-oping is only useful when someone needs resources from someone else's world, or you're bored and want to grind faster. Unlike Warframe, there's a lot of situations where grinding solo might be faster than grinding co-op, and some gameplay that's completely off-limits for co-op too.

CONCLUSION

Conclusion: It's a pretty good game. Not a masterpiece, nothing that'll change your entire outlook or introduce innovative mechanics, but it's pretty damn fun if you want an MMO to play on your off time. If you haven't had problems with MTXs or gambling in general before, you'll probably be fine with this game as well. 6/10.
