This Saturday is International Coffee Day, and I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate my undying love for caffeine. In the spirit of our favorite energy-boosting beverages, we’ve put together a list of high-speed games that embody the exhilarating rush provided by a fresh cup of coffee.
This classic endless runner tasks players with staying alive by killing foes and dodging bullets using a makeshift jetpack. The pace has been bumped up even further in this sequel, which features new locales, abilities, and enemies, all of which combine to create an enthralling, dynamic, high-speed experience.
Piano Tiles 3 is a rhythmic musical piano game where you play songs by tapping at tiles that move down four lanes on the screen. This setup does a fine job of emulating the experience of playing a piano, but it also gets much more intense and much faster than you might expect. There are tons of tracks to choose from, all with different difficulties that provide plenty of depth to the gameplay.
Geometry Dash Lite tests your reaction speed and cognitive skills to see if you can quickly dodge impending danger using straightforward mechanics like jumping and weaving through traps and spikes. The goal is to make it to the end of the level without dying. This game demands pixel-perfect precision in your taps, but the catchy soundtrack helps ease some of the frustration of dying over and over again.
If you’ve ever been stuck in a traffic jam, you’ll probably appreciate Pako Highway’s high-speed solution to this everyday problem: simply slamming into traffic and continuing on your way. Daredevil drivers in this game accumulate points by zooming along the road as long as possible without crashing or running out of time. This is a high-score chase, plain and simple, but it provides some variety through the many vehicles and upgrades available for purchase between runs. You can read more about Pako Highway in my first impressions piece from earlier this year.
It would be a sin to not include a Sonic game on a list of titles all about speed, and thankfully there are several great mobile outings to choose from for Sega’s iconic hedgehog. Sonic Dash 2 is one of the best, though. This endless runner features a handful of characters from the Sonic universe, each employing unique abilities to cleverly build on a style of gameplay that’s been popular all the way back to Temple Run. Never has Sonic’s “gotta go fast” attitude been more directly and challengingly translated to mobile platforms.
💬 Have you played any of these high-speed games? Do you drink coffee? If so, what’s your perfect cup of coffee, and why do you like it?
