October 28 is fast approaching, and like many shooter fans, I can barely wait to get my hands on the newest entry in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare II. In a few weeks, we’ll be dropped into another adventure with the badass crew of Task Force 141. But if you have an itchy trigger finger like I do, here are a few suggestions to help get you combat-ready on your phone while we wait. Check your guns, load your ammo, and get ready to fire into this list of military might.
Modern Combat 5 sets its campaign battles in some surprisingly diverse locations, including the streets of Tokyo and Venice. As an elite military operative, you must navigate a harrowing, twisty conflict, all to the accompaniment of a killer soundtrack, naturally.
In addition to the story mode, Modern Combat 5 offers plenty of multiplayer options, such as Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Push the Payload, and Free for All Battle Royale. And if you don’t want to go up against strangers, you can even create your own game and play with a squad of up to twenty friends.
It’s the Halloween season, so of course, I had to give this horror-themed FPS some love. In Project RIP Mobile, hordes of undead now rule the earth, and humanity’s only hope is in a group of evil-hunting special operatives known as Project Rest in Pieces. You may be going up against the forces of Hell itself, but joining this crew comes with benefits. You have access to a large arsenal of weaponry, including katanas, shotguns, assault rifles, and grenade launchers, all with upgradeable stats and skins. And the (rest in) pièce de résistance? The graphics are absolutely killer.
Alright, it’s time to get some sci-fi on this list. Infinity Ops takes place in a near future where humanity has surpassed the current limits of technological development, and the world has descended into the chaos of interplanetary warfare!
The real highlight of Infinity Ops is its movement, which feels incredible thanks to reduced gravity. Mobility-based items such as jetpacks allow players to soar across entire maps with ease. There’s no real campaign mode here; It’s just a good old-fashioned multiplayer shoot ’em up. But the maps are fun and well-scaled, and the game delivers loads of action.
Critical Ops is a fast-paced FPS that tests your reflexes and tactical skills. It gives you an exciting taste of modern terrorist warfare. In multiplayer you can fight as a counter-terrorist or, if you’re in the mood to cause a little mayhem, as a terrorist. Critical Ops is equipped with all the usual accouterments you’d expect from a modern shooter: loads of weapons, intense modes, and ranked games against other players.
The real standout feature in Critical Ops is its Defuse mode. Borrowed pretty directly from Counter-Strike, this mode sees one team trying to plant and defend a bomb until detonation, while the other attempts to defuse it. The tense showdowns that results are worth your attention if you enjoy military shooters at all.
Maybe this one’s obvious, but what better way to prepare for Call of Duty than...more Call of Duty?!. I’ve written about Call of Duty Mobile in-depth, and with Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0 arriving before the end of the year, and of course, Warzone Mobile due for release in 2023, I’m not planning on stopping any time soon. The highlight of Call of Duty: Mobile is undoubtedly its battle royale mode, which features up to one hundred people playing simultaneously in one- to four-person squads. With the integration of classic maps from previous COD titles, like Nuketown, it’s not only a gem in and of itself but also pure nostalgia. For those of us who have answered the call, it’s a must-play on any military shooter list.
There’s our list of titles to tide you over before the big day comes and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II hits store shelves! That big day, in case you needed reminding, is October 28. Until then, you best keep working on your aim, because when I see you on the battlefield, I ain’t takin’ it easy.
💬 Have you played any of these titles, and what other FPS do we need to try before the next Call of Duty release? Let me know in the comment section.
