CAN YOU HANDLE ROGUELIKE ELEMENTS IN A TOWER DEFENSE – ISLE OF ARROWS REVIEW

1K View2022-11-04
Isle of Arrows is a Multiplatform (Mobile and PC) Tower Defense game, but with a very interesting twist: You cant pick which towers and paths to place, they are randomly picked from your deck and this review will tell you about this game. So there it is, Roguelike TD!
At first it seems pretty easy to manage all those random paths and you have some old good Tetris feeling, where you need that specific part to be available to maximize your performance. Enemies start easy too, and most of the mistakes you can make will be forgiven.

But as the time goes by, enemies are getting tougher, getting physical and magical shields, armor, more health and you need to think harder on how to build your towers, buildings and paths in order to properly defend your base and dont lose health. In the campaign you can get another surprise – additional lane will open and now you have to build 2, or maybe even 3 defense grids. Good thing is that you can plan ahead and use same tower on different lane as well. And that there are limited amount of levels per chapter/ campaign.

At the moment you can play tutorial, 3 campaigns, gauntlet and daily defense. Campaigns are self explanatory, moreover in order to unlock other game modes you will have to complete some campaign stages. In the daily defense you compete with other players on the same starting map to get the highscore on the leaderboard.
TapTap
As you progress the game you will unlock variety of towers, roads, additional buildings, bonuses and relics that will be added to your deck and will have a chance appearing on your next run, hopefully making it easier.
All those factors of randomness and modifiers will make replayability of this game way higher than normal tower defense games, where once you completed the level, there is no point going through it again. And ability to show off your skill in the daily dungeon to compete with others might attract your competitive part.

The challenge of tower defense meets the randomness of a board game - Isle of Arrows Quick Review
I love tower defense games, but it’s a genre that can sometimes feel like once you’ve played one of them, you’ve played them all. That’s why I’m always excited when I see new twists on the formula, such as the more trap-oriented approach of Candy Disaster (read my review here), or the subject of this quick review. Isle of Arrows is a game that blends the strategic intensity of a great tower defense title with the adaptation required by the best board games and card games.

The Tower Defense Genre Gets A New Twist
Isle of Arrows gives new life to the tower defense genre. Not only are you placing your usual defense towers, but you will be building out the lane enemies travel down. This makes the gameplay never dull and always exciting as no 2 playthroughs are ever the same. The game features 3 different game modes as well, ranging from a traditional campaign to an endless gauntlet. Your objective is to build out the land and protect your core from enemies each wave. Each round you will draw a card that can either be a defensive tower, a path to extend the lane, or a special building/tile to place.
