This game got me playing it all night. It have that Dead Space feel to it, smooth gameplay, interesting story and horror parts that makes you lean to your screen for hours while exploring Callisto moon for a way out. Safe way out.
Callisto Protocol Story
Callisto Protocol is a 3rd person action horror game, thats taking place on a distant prison colony moon. Our ship crashed, we barely survived and got to questioning. In the end we became prisoners of this colony, no other options. We will get Core implant and become part of the system and pass out
Next thing we know is that we wake up to a total chaos. Fire everywhere, dead decapacitated bodies, blood, and some biological growth. Its obvious that something is wrong, our prison cell is open and we our out to survive. We will find friends who will help us along the way, a lot of creepy enemies, scarejumps, and really involving storyline.
Callisto Protocol Gameplay and Combat
Gameplay starts simple but gets more complicated as we move forward. If you played Dead Space series you will recognize a lot of common things here, but with a twist. At first (and for the first few hours of the game) you will mostly use melee weapons, so learning the basic combat mechanics will be essential.
We can use left and right movement buttons to dodge enemy attacks and back button to block enemy attack lowering the damage. All those moves open opportunities for counterattack with a melee weapon. Fights are intense and extremely fun. There are a lot of finishing moves, death animations and ways how you can take enemy out.
As we move through the game we will unlock pistol, that we can use for ranged attacks and use it in the melee combo sequence, kinetic glove that can pull enemies in and push them away (sometimes in deadly obstacles) and other things that can help us along the way.
Of course thats not everything. Enemies and chests contain credits that can be used to upgrade your equipment. Upgrade process and skill trees are not very complex, but they add a lot of flavor to the game. You can also craft consumables like medkits and ammo at the bench.
Callisto Protocol PROS and CONS
Now lets move on to Callisto Protocols Pros and Cons.
Pros
Insane graphics. Callisto Protocol uses Unreal Engine 4, and it looks fantastic
Very fun melee combat animation. When properly mastered combat looks and feels intense and challenging at the same time
Good storyline. As you play the game you will find audio logs that will put you deeper into the lore of the game. And main storyline is very intriguing as it is.
Scary enemies. The character design is top notch, monsters look fantastic and creepy. You can distinguish the easier enemies and tougher stronger ones
Cons
System requirements. Even with lower graphical setting weak PCs might have issues with game performance. Although it is still playable even on 30-40 fps.
Shallow upgrade mechanics. If we compare it to Dead Space we have maybe 1/3 of upgrade options.
A lot of crash and performance reports from other players. I personally had problems launching the game, but game integrity check fixed it and I never had issues with it afterwards.
