Otherworld Legends is an 8bit styled Roguelike that combines zelda like exploration with classic beat em up mechanics (a la the ninja turtles games of the 90s) topped with what is perceived to be a wide array of characters and play styles. If you are an xbox fan you may notice a bit of resemblance to Wizards of Legend which is similarly styled and ordinated.
The story is, in my opinion, a bit lackluster, though necessary. Essentially, a particular entity has created this demi plane to train warriors to be strong enough to help him defeat his greatest enemy...or something like that i honestly did almost no reading. either way the only out is to get stronger.....so stronger we get.
All that out the way, the game is downright fun. the upgrades you can pick up or purchase along the way are hot swappable and you can house up to four at a time (at first) allowing for a level of playstyle customization not so quickly mastered by many other gaming endeavors currently available. The animatiions are smooth, and the attacks flashy. Hits that connect are deftly rewarding, and the action feels fast paced with few dull moments. The boss battles are challenging, but not quite frustrating, complete with creative designs, movesets, and attack patterns. The basis is pretty straightforward and simple, however i think that may be where the beauty truly lies. you travel from room to room, beating on baddies until you get to a store where you can use all the coin you've been collecting (theres a chest at the end of each room) to purchase upgrades and companions. I got a wolf....fox...thingy. But the beauty of thsi minimalist approach, is the joy of never not knowingwhat to do next. lost? beat up baddies until i find my way again.Dont know whats next? beat up baddies until whats next finds me. Just keep fighting and you'll get where you're going. Most of the guesswork is taken off your hands so you can really focus on just having a good time. I will say that, while the Whaddoyouthink reviews, are usually based on one hour of play time, I easily found myself looking at the clock only to be surprised that TWO hours had already passed. Yea...this game is that fun.
A few additives, the music in this game is very on brand and entertaining, thegame DOES have controller support built in, and it also has a multiplayer mode, however that does not become accessible until you reach a particular echelon within the game.
All in all i would give teh game a 7.3 out of 10. the gameplay mechanics are solid, the implementation is smooth, And it is literally an enjoyable experience all around.
This game an;t nowhere near zelda like gameplay.
