To explore the origin of Devil May Cry, it is necessary to mention Resident Evil series, another hit horror game developed by CAPCOM. First hinted at in early December 1999, Devil May Cry started out as an incarnation of Resident Evil 4. Initially developed for the PlayStation 2, the game was directed by Hideki Kamiya after producer Shinji Mikami requested him to create a new entry in the Resident Evil series.

By mid-2000, Kamiya Hideki submitted the under-development “Resident Evil 3.25” to his leader Shinji Mikami. Although Mikami thought that the 3.25 version did not conform to the Resident Evil series' style, he did not want to abandon such great work.

After series consideration, Kamiya Hideki decided to change the theme from sci-fi to fantasy, introducing the setting of "devil world", and the virus army became the devil army. As for the title, Kamiya's most satisfactory choice is "Devil May Care". He believes that these three words can fully express the protagonist's unruly personality. But later, he found out that "Devil May Care" has been registered by a movie. So the title changed to "Devil May Cry".
