PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it—even if you don’t like sports. As someone that doesn’t particularly enjoy sports or anything to do with it in games, Sports Story had me hooked. I discovered plenty to do beyond just sports in this narrative-rich RPG, including exploring a variety of areas, interacting with unique characters, and more.
TIME PLAYED
I played Sports Story for four hours and got decently far in the game. After an hour and a half, the game opened up and allowed me to explore different areas alone without following certain quests or reading unnecessary dialogue. I could also return to certain areas later on to unlock different items or mini quests.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• Gameplay. I can’t lie, I felt pretty confused playing Sports Story at first. It’s not the typical sports game I’d imagined—quite far from it, actually—which is surprisingly great. The game features sports, of course, but it keeps things spontaneous and refreshing with a bunch of weird and enjoyable non-sports activities, from dungeon exploring to pirate fighting to a bunch of mini-games.
• Narrative. I need to commend Sports Story’s hilarious, well-made narrative. The game utilizes text size, speed, and italics to convey emotion in a way that impressed me. The bickering, witty dialogue, and frequent jokes provided me with a couple of chuckles along the way as well.
• Exploration. Although it takes some time before Sports Story opens up, I enjoyed the freedom of figuring out the game for myself and talking to a bunch of interesting characters.
• Aesthetic. Sports Story features stunning pixel-art design, with bold, bright colors that complement the game’s lighthearted narrative and gameplay.
WHAT SUCKS
• Slightly buggy. It didn’t happen often, but I ran into a few annoyances when playing Sports Story. Sometimes the game would slow down and then speed up, and on other occasions, the camera zoomed in on an NPC in the middle of an interaction.
