KartRider Drift is a brand new game that only came out a few days ago and is pretty much a Mario Kart clone, but it's also a lot more than that. With its cross play compatibility, this game allows you to team up or take down players across multiple platforms, these include Playstation, XBOX, Mobile and PC! That's pretty impressive if you ask me, and is a great way for the player base to always be populated.
Gameplay wise this game is fantastic. There is 5 modes you can choose to play, and in those 5 modes there's also some different modes within them, for example in the "Item Mode" you can queue up for Solo, Duo and Squad Item races, in "Speed Mode" you can queue up for Solo, Duo and Squad Speed races. License has you doing races while also trying to clear tasks, the better you do, the more stars you can get for each task, up to 3 stars.
Time Attack is also where you can find the Ranked Challenge mode as well. Time Attack is where you square off against your own times and try to beat them, while ranked is... Well ranked is as you'd expect it to be, compete against others in order to rise up in the player rankings. And then finally there is the custom races, these are where you and your friends can either create your own race, or join a custom one to play on.
With all these modes you can definitely find some fun times for sure. Since this is a cross platform game, I chose to try it out on Steam and I must say the game runs fantastically, I used my game pad for the controls and the steering was smooth, it never felt like the steering was janky or anything of the sort. It was a pleasure to play on the gamepad and I honestly recommend you use one if you're playing on PC.
The races are fast paced, entertaining and I truly had a lot of fun in the game. I am however a bit confused on how to get new skins or customisations for my rider and cars. I think you can buy them from the store, but at the moment the choices are very small. I think this has to do with the game being very new though. There is also a battle pass that does have a premium version where you can get some more skins for the various riders and accessories for your cars.
I would like to see a pirate ship car to go with my pirate girl rider though. I hope they bring one out in the near future. I truly think this game would be a lot of fun to do collabs with as well. Visually this game is gorgeous, using the unreal engine, the graphics are jaw dropping. While cartoony, they look great and the bright and colourful aesthetic is gorgeous.
I did check what the game looks like on mobile too, and it looks just as good there too. I'm very impressed. Overall I'd say that KartRider: Drift is the perfect game for those with a Mario Kart itch, but don't have a Nintendo Switch or just want to play a free variation of the game.
Combine it with the fact that you can cross play with all platforms, even on mobile and you have a game that will always have a big community, especially if this kicks off on mobile. I can see myself playing this casually on a regular basis and hopefully pull in some friends to play with too. I highly recommend you give this game a shot. It is free after all. And cross play. What's not to love?!
