【Tap Topic】Epic Games vs. Apple: Which Side are You on?

One heated topic last week, the battle between Epic Games and Apple. So basically, Fortnite, an immensely successful battle royale game by Epic Games, got removed from App Store.
TapTap
This was because of Epic’s new payment option, Epic Direct Payment, which is to circumvent Apple transaction fee policy. “Currently, when using Apple and Google payment options, Apple and Google collect a 30% fee, and the up to 20% price drop does not apply,” Epic wrote in their blog. “If Apple or Google lower their fees on payments in the future, Epic will pass along the savings to you.”
Apparently, Apple, as well as Google Play store, was not happy about it and both removed Fortnite from their Store.

If you missed this news, you can read it here. And you can also watch the satirical video published by Fortnite, in which they defied the App Store Monopoly.

We at TapTap do not ask for shares of revenue. We will always stand by game developers, and we support Epic Games’ action. But as a player, what is your opinion?

I'm sorry but Apple is right here. iOS is built by Apple and they have their own rules for their appstore. If they ask for 30% price, they can. When you add your game to appstore, you agree everything in terms of service. Sure, 30% might be huge but like I say thats their rule and their OS.  There is like no way epic can win this and I don't think apple will step back, if they cancel their licances, well rip.

I agree with you. Objectively, Apple is within its rights to implement the removal of Fortnite. Simply because it's their own place, and Epic also agreed to the terms before. At the same time I don't think Epic is prepared either. They did want a lower commission, just like they can offer developers lower commission compared to Steam. This may be fine for players, but breaking the monopoly of the gaming industry, Apple or Google would ban certainly.
