Around the start of 2020, COVID-19 took over the world and everyone was sitting at home in isolation. What did I do to keep myself busy? Play games, of course. That’s where I started playing Among Us. I remember it was sometime in 2020 and I saw a YouTube video by Disguised Toast playing this weird game with jellybean-like characters called Among Us. At first, I didn’t understand the rave about the game. I mean, it’s just a mystery murder game, how good can it be? Well, I gave Among Us a try in early 2020 and I’m not going to lie, I probably spent four to five months playing the game. I even had a friend group made up of strangers I met on Discord that I’d always play with every evening.
Although I played for so long, it doesn’t mean I always had fun. Eventually, I lost the passion to play Among Us, and it wasn’t that I’d got bored of it, but because everyone else had. I had nobody to play with. All my friends, even those I made along the way, didn’t want to play the game anymore, so naturally, I decided to leave too.
Later on, in 2021, I returned to Among Us and started playing again. I joined a couple of Discord servers and began assembling another group of friends I could play with. Despite searching far and wide, I couldn’t really find a lot of people that still enjoyed the game like I did.
At this moment, I decided that maybe I should try playing the game alone. I played for hours and hours, joining public lobbies and typing to people, but it didn’t feel right. I realized that it was the social interaction and vocal discussions I had with other people that made the game feel magical. After only a few days into this return, I eventually left Among Us for good.
Fast forward, it’s 2023 and most people aren’t stuck at home anymore, but COVID-19’s still around. Lately, I’ve had the urge to play more multiplayer games and connect with other people, but couldn’t really find the answer to this. I thought maybe League of Legends or Valorant might fill that void, but to no avail, it didn’t. This is the moment when I found out about Goose Goose Duck and the game going viral over the world. Now, I’ve heard about Goose Goose Duck before, but didn’t think too much of it. I’ve always thought of it as a copy-pasted version of Among Us. I mean, it came out right after Among Us had gone globally viral too.
I got assigned to play and talk about Goose Goose Duck this week, but I didn’t really expect anything to stand out. To be frank, I came in expecting that I’d be talking smack about Goose Goose Duck—so much of it too. However, I’m here, right now, talking about how I’ve found the game I’ve been searching for that’s also absolutely blown me away.
Of course, I can’t confidently say that Goose Goose Duck’s definitely better than Among Us, but from what I’ve played and the experience I have with both games, I can at least talk about what I love about this title. The issue I’ve always had with Among Us is that it’s hard finding people on Discord with microphones that can discuss topics in matches. With Goose Goose Duck, I didn’t need to search Discord servers since the game has an in-built feature that allowed me to mute or deafen the game and talk to other players if I wanted to. To me, someone that’s spent hours tirelessly searching for groups to play with, this feature felt revolutionary.
Adding to that, Goose Goose Duck had eight unique maps to choose from, which felt like a pretty big step up from Among Us’s old selection of four. Each map felt unique and had so many different areas I could explore. I could also choose to play different modes.
The controls felt pretty comfortable and the visuals looked polished. Goose Goose Duck had everything I’d grown to love about games like Among Us and so much more than I hadn't expected. It’s hard to say for sure, but after playing for these past couple of days, I seemed to enjoy and prefer Goose Goose Duck much more than Among Us. Of course, there's a long road to travel before Goose Goose Duck reaches the milestones that Among Us has passed. But with what it offers and how fast the game's growing, I definitely understand why Goose Goose Duck's growing to be bigger than Among Us. It's one hell of a ducking game.
