PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play this game! A Space for the Unbound is an emotional narrative adventure that deals with romance, depression, and anxiety. It managed to jerk a tear or two from my eyes while playing, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. With its beautiful artistic backdrop of a ’90s Indonesian town and its exploration of mature themes, A Space for the Unbound is a great way to kick off 2023 if you're looking for a deep and meaningful narrative experience.
TIME PLAYED
I’ve spent around six hours on this game and am currently on chapter four. A Space for the Unbound is five chapters in total, so depending on how long you spend speaking to everyone and doing side quests, the game should last around ten hours, give or take.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• The story. Hands down, the narrative drives A Space for the Unbound. It deals with some VERY mature themes, from depression to bullying to suicide. The game even warns players to seek help if they're going through these issues.
That being said, A Space for the Unbound doesn’t just use these themes for shock value. It tells an intriguing story of two adolescents that have what I can only describe as Inception-like powers to hop into other people’s dreams. Through these powers, I was able to uncover the stories of the townspeople and the protagonists, and the game’s brilliant writing kept me hooked.
• Music. Listen to the soundtrack. It added to the story’s depth and set the tone for an emotional rollercoaster.
WHAT SUCKS
• The back and forth. Running to the same locations and fetching items became tedious by the time I hit the second chapter. The fetch quests weren’t enough to ruin the game, but it felt like padding. It would be great if there were an option to skip the puzzles and go through the narrative experience alone. That’s the best part of the game, anyway!
