PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it! I never imagined a twin-stick shooter where playing from the perspective of a girl in a coma was a game that could be pitched or, more importantly, could be so fun! Neverawake is a side-scrolling dive into the human subconscious and a visual masterpiece.
TIME PLAYED
So far, I’ve given Neverawake around three hours of my time, and it’s been a damn good investment! The evil veggies of the forest have been vanquished, and I’m set to conquer the hell hounds of the dog park. I like to take my time when I go through games, but even at three hours, I would say the game is ½ way done, so it’s not long at all.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• The gameplay. The controls are simple, fun, and easy to master. If you are terrible at aiming or shooters in general, the auto-aim function turns this twin-stick shooter into a single-stick experience. Developer Neotro Inc. does a great job of making Neverawake playable for those that might not be the best at the genre.
• The visuals. One of the best aspects of Neverawake is its exciting and unique visuals. Enemy imagery bounces between horrific and fun. Hand-drawn art is combined with three-dimensional elements. The way these styles clash sells the concept of being in a child’s subconscious and sets the atmosphere for confronting a little girl’s inner demons.
• Collectibles. Throughout the game, you’ll get new items for Rem that will make her more of a badass, but you’ll also collect diary entries that push the story along and provide secret information. Finding these goodies added another layer to the fun for me.
• The narrative. Nevrawake’s plot is multilayered and cleverly woven into the gameplay of the story. The game’s bosses directly relate to Rem’s nightmares and life, and it can get quite dark sometimes.
WHAT SUCKS
• Nope! I didn’t find any major problems with Neverawake. Okay, I got annoyed by some enemies after reaching 90% soul completion rate on a stage, dying, and then having to restart, but it wasn’t enough to spoil my experience.
