Ask any lover of first-person shooters to make a list of their top-ten FPS titles of all time, and you'll more than likely hear GoldenEye bellowed with enthusiastic vigor! And why shouldn't it be? This classic raised the bar for the genre by introducing some seriously awesome weaponry and a split-screen multiplayer that dominated the lunchroom conversations of my fifth-grade youth. Not to mention it's connected to the best James Bond movie of the 90s' starring Pierce Brosnan as the legend himself.
Now that GoldenEye has finally been released on Nintendo Switch and Xbox Game Pass. It's the perfect time to think about what made this game so great in the first place. Undoubtedly, any millennial that could get their hands on an N64 has memories gathering around the screen and yelling at their friends how they wouldn't be $hi* if they didn't have that one-shot kill Golden Gun to protect them... okay, maybe that was just me.
I didn't have a computer at the time (yes, this was the dark ages), and first-person shooters were largely in the territory of the PC crowd, so when GoldenEye was first introduced, it was a whole new world for me. I would hide and wait for my buddies to pass corners just in time for the proximity mines to go off and blow them all to kingdom come. I was a camper before I even knew what the term meant!
Added to the fact it had cheat codes for unlimited ammo, invisible mines, no radar, and all of these could be turned on in the multiplayer mode meant this game was crack for kids. The story mirrored the movie so closely, and with playable characters throughout the bond franchise, it undoubtedly indoctrinated me into the franchise and is responsible for making me a Bond fan to this day.
So, with this new release, will younger generations see what I saw in the game? Probably not, but there's a reason why James Bond is so timeless and why every generation latches onto something different that keeps the franchise going. What makes GoldenEye and the Bond series timeless is unique to the individual, and I am happy to know that this game is still the topic of discussion twenty-six years after its original release.
