I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia while playing Perfect Grind. Maybe it's because the cel-shaded animation or the covering up of rival skate gang stickers reminded me of Jet Grind Radio, but whatever the case, Perfect Grind delivers a unique experience, some feel-good tricks, and a colorful cast of characters that kept me grinding. Perfect Grind does a great job of delivering an authentic skateboarding feel on the mobile device. For starters, the control scheme makes it easy to perform tricks, and I could pull off several combinations on the touchscreen. Secondly, the characters I could unlock are wide and varied. I mean, there's a freakin' anthropomorphic banana, for crying out loud.
The different game modes also made it fun to try out my options, from career mode, where I had to complete various challenges to single run, where the goal was to beat my highest score. These games are about bragging rights, so having a mode for that purpose is pretty dope.
Perfect Grind wasn't exactly "perfect." I wanted to control the speed and have my character move faster, but it was out of my hands and based mostly on the momentum I built up after a successful trick. Additionally, to unlock most game modes, it costs $2.99! Despite these Pecadillios, Perfect Grind is one of the better skate games available for mobile. Download and enjoy.
