PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it if you love music or Final Fantasy, and especially if you love both! If music makes the people come together, it’s nowhere more apparent than in Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. After all, where else could you see a whole squad of Final Fantasy heroes like Squall, Cloud, Rikku, and Vivi come together in song?! This title takes the best music across the entire history of Square Enix’s epic RPG series and packages it together in an incredibly nostalgic and fun way. Combined with cool extras like multiplayer and collectibles, I found myself locked to the screen saying, “Just one more song.”
TIME PLAYED
I clocked in around seven hours on Theatrhythm Final Bar Line on the PlayStation 4. So far, I’ve unlocked tracks from Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy II, And Final Fantasy XI. With multiple modes and difficulties in replaying songs, I’ve got hours of gameplay left.
WHAT'S AWESOME
• The song collection. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line offers hundreds of songs across the Final Fantasy series. I don’t need an excuse to listen to these masterpieces—I have entire game soundtracks saved on my phone. However, having a context for listening to my favorite tunes while building my characters and arranging my parties was nice.
• The gameplay. The gameplay here goes beyond the average rhythm game. There are plenty of collectibles, like summons, abilities, cards, and keys, which I needed to unlock new music. Different game modes allowed me to play independently, against a buddy, or teamed up in co-op. Additionally, arranging my party based on special abilities and character type offered a cool way to add in some RPG elements, which gave me an edge on the more difficult songs.
• Replay value. Each song comes equipped with varying difficulty levels, so to truly master a song, I needed to play it on all levels. Additionally, customizing and upgrading characters gave added incentive to replay past songs with a new team
WHAT SUCKS
• No narrative. I would have loved it if there were just a smidgen of a story tying everything together, but alas...I was left wanting!
