Pixel Caves is a fast paced platformer game and it have mixed reviews. Are those legit, is the game good or not?
In this article we will talk about both good and bad sides of Pixel Caves so you can decide if this is the right game for you.
PROS
1. Interesting gameplay.
You have a timer before the ghost will spawn, Death spawns on relic pickup and a lot of different enemies. You can attack them using weapons, jump on them Mario style and just avoid them. They drop different resources for you too.
2. Procedurally generated levels.
I havent met this in platformer games yet. It adds a nice touch to the gameplay, but can be pretty controversial, with some dead ends, random locations and hard to navigate areas. I think it adds realism to the game, where you can explore some area and find nothing interesting there.
3. A lot of customization options.
You can get pets, hats, costumes etc that will alter your look if you are bored of the current one. This can fresh up things a bit. But they are purely cosmetic.
CONS
1. Controls are a bit hard to grasp.
You actually can climb walls, but you need to get precise jumps for it. At first you will need some time to get used to controls, but it just gets a little bit better. Its still pretty easy to mess up and die.
2. No checkpoints.
Basically you start over every time you die. There are no checkpoints, you just have to push as far as possible without dying.
3. No progression.
There is nothing you can do to make your life easier. Most if not all purchases are purely cosmetic, so you will have to rely on your skills instead of patience.
Verdict. Is Pixel Caves good?
Probably yes. It just needs a goal to strive to. In a current state I dont see any point playing it past initial few runs, since it seems pointless. There are no checkpoints and progression, so its try hard until you die and then try again. I just feel something is amiss.
