Okay strap yourselves in because it’s going to be a long one
1. Matchmaking
I posted a couple of days ago without watching the season 5 update video on YouTube how the matchmaking system was scuffed by using trophies instead of MMR to determine who you play with and against. I am so happy to find out that’s exactly what is happening in season 5. It’ll create more balance between players in game and will hopefully make sure that the games aren’t too hard or too easy.
2. Casual mode changes
I feel the hero selection for casual modes is a good change that was needed. Instead of picking your hero before queuing up, we can now choose our hero when we find out the map we are playing. I think that this will ensure the pace of the game changes drastically. For example if it’s a longer map like emmental you can play someone like ossas to have a better chance of winning rather than just picking ossas beforehand in the hopes of receiving a map to fit his play style.
3. New hero: Fade
Obviously without playing him yet I can’t give my full opinion of what I think of him. So I’ll just give my opinion based on what I know of him so far. 1 thing I really like is he is a vanguard hero with a ranged attack which fits relatively well with my play style. They say in the video you don’t need to aim like a pro, however I’m not sure how well this pans out seeing as he has a projectile attack, I think in lower ranking games he will be easy, but in higher ranking games you will need to at least sort of predict where the enemy is going to be when you fire his main attack. His active ability is a mix of victor’s charge and Reinhardt’s pin from overwatch. I think this ability works well as you still need to aim for your enemy however when you do hit them it seems like it’s basically a one shot to lower hp heroes. They don’t mention this in the YouTube video but you will be able to use it as an escape ability as well in certain situations. His ultimate is basically a black hole that sucks in enemies you can shoot out to do damage and stun. I’m not sure how I feel about this ultimate yet because again in higher ranking games, unless you’re on payload race you won’t always be able to get all 3 enemies in his ult. But like I said at the beginning I haven’t played him yet so my opinion might change of him later on.
4. New gameplay
This is a huge addition to the game, I’ve been wanting this since I started. And I’ve been playing the game since it’s release. Finally we get a 5v5 mode. Even though it’s going to be in beta form, I’m so excited to try this new game mode out. It’s going to be so exciting to play something more fast paced especially on control maps. I really enjoy the fact that in 5v5 we’re going to be able to switch hero’s mid match. In my opinion this will make sure that you can change your team comp to counter the enemies.
For the beta there are 11 heroes who have had a new ability added to them. I’m not sure how to feel about this just yet as it’s going to take a while to get used to 11 new abilities and to be able to work out which ones work best for each different maps. It’s also going to be challenging to manage the new abilities as we’re so used to having only 1 active ability. However I do enjoy that some of them will have different effects, like having an anti heal on chemist. This will dramatically change how the matches will go. For example having the new anti heal on chemist will help massively in higher ranking games as she is currently dominating in them. Obviously it’s going to be in its beta so changes will come and go.
5. Hero balance changes
3 hero’s are going to be getting balance changes in season 5.
Aleta is getting a critical damage nerf which I think is needed as in higher ranking games she is also dominating alongside chemist
Gatlyn is getting a buff to her passive boosts. She will now get a 50% movement speed boost for 1.5 seconds upon entering and leaving uber charge. I personally don’t think this was needed as most of the time with gatlyn you are playing far back because of her range.
Zero kelvin is getting an ammo capacity nerf. In higher ranking games I personally didn’t see much of kelvin anyway so I don’t think this will make a difference.
6. My final thoughts
I am personally really excited for season 5 as so many new things are coming and so many changes are happening. I’m really happy 5v5 is being added. Im also really happy about them fixing the matchmaking system as it was heavily needed. I hope my excitement continues as I'm playing the season. Thank you for anybody who took the time to read this as I know it was a lot to go through. If you have any opinions for season 5 please feel free to comment down below.
lmao, I have fade and honestly, he's not a long-range vanguard. He's more of a watered-down Christina with lots of hp because the projectile velocity of the cannons is super slow and easily dodgeable, the tactical ability is really good but also dodgeable because you can hardly control where you need to turn if an opponent jumps out of the way or hides behind cover, he'll sometimes the hit doesn't even register do you just slam into the wall by yourself and look like an idiot when the enemy fries you, and last, but not least his gun only has to two balls which is understandable for balancing issues but come on:(

Oh damn, thanks for the comment, I haven’t got him yet so it’s good to know that I don’t need to play him much if he isn’t balanced well :)

Hopefully the matchmaking system separates the 'casual' and 'ranked' sides of gaming. The trophy road doesn't feel any 'casual' at all and it just gets competitive at higher stacks of trophies which makes the matchmaking system incrediblty awful.

Yeah you’re 100% right, the casual game modes aren’t “casual” at all. Lower trophies feel too easy and higher trophies feel like I’ve got bots on my team
