The Yakuza series is by far one of my favorite series in the gaming world and one of my favs regarding Sega lineup. This time around i got my hands on there latest project called Like A Dragon: Ishin. Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin! is an action-adventure video game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It is a spin-off of the Like a Dragon series, formerly and commonly known in English localization as Yakuza.
This 2023 remake of a 2014 Yakuza series spin-off that was previously only available to Japanese audiences transposes the tried and tested street fighting formula from modern Tokyo onto the final days of Japan’s Edo period. I didnt get a chance to play the 2014 version so this was very refreshing to me.
The major thing i noticed immediately was how familiar our protagonist looked like Kazuma Kiryu from the scowl to the build in a sense. The story takes place in 1860s Kyoto which is plagued by an widespread inequality, and one samurai will change the course of history in his search for justice. Take up the sword of Sakamoto Ryoma and venture to Kyoto to find your father’s killer, clear yourself of a framed murder, and restore your honor. In doing so, you will bring an end to the samurai era and forever change the future of Japan. Draw your blade, load your revolver, and join the revolution in this heated historical adventure that only the creators of Yakuza: Like a Dragon could produce.
The combat is by far one of my favorites when playing an action adventure title and Sega really loves to hit home with these fights. During my play i tested out the combat demo which incorporated 2 missions with a boss battle in each and it took me a bit to get use to the gun and swordplay. Both missions is decent length to get a good grasp of how the game is played. I loved switching from multiple styles and my favorite will be the Gun and Katana mixture. After a few deaths later i finally was able to beat both missions which left me wanting more. The Game is currently on Steam and has a nice price tag of $60 which isnt too bad especially for a Remake.
I'm playing this game as well and posting gameplay videos here. Be sure to check them out in my profile! 💚
