It’s intriguingly weird
Limbus Company is a weird game, there’s no putting it lightly. Your character has a flaming clock for a head, suddenly followed by a suicidal undying highschooler-looking crew riding on a magic bus, the whole premise is just absurd and confusing. However, don’t let that turn you off as the story is actually one of the main selling points of this narrative-driven turn-based gacha RPG game.
Set in a massive dystopian steampunk-looking metropolis, players will embark on a journey to find the 12 Golden Boughs. It is also set in the same world as the previous games, Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruins from its developers Project Moon.
Information overload
This free-to-play game packs more story that I had anticipated, even more so than many full-pledged PC and console games. The game’s introduction hits like a (Lim)bus when it comes to the exposition to the plot, showering you with tons of text ridden panels explaining the lore, and introducing you to more than 10 anime-like characters — inspired by real-world literature — all in your first 15 minutes of play.
And as if that’s not enough, it also dumps on the player what feels like a tens of hours worth of game mechanics in just a one hour span. The game is like, “here it is, now move on to the next one”. Nothing will make sense and the players will barely grasp the whole idea of the mechanics. However, there remains a tiny sliver of interesting bits in this game that is compelling enough to make players stay. Is it the stylish turn-based action-packed 2D fights? Is it rich storytelling? Maybe a little bit of both.
Gameplay Analysis
The battles are simplistic mechanically, just as simple as drawing a line to form a chain of attack commands for the whole team to play out at once. Combos are done by chaining similarly colored moves and abilities to each other. This system overall feels like a three-match game in disguise that ranks color combos and associations above everything else.
The resulting presentation of the automated combat is visually stunning and action-packed. The animations of the fights are cool and felt like anime characters duking it out with over-the-top stylish slashes and gory dismemberments.
The main character is an amnesiac named Dante, his head is a burning clock for some reason, and he encounters this trusty mystical crew called the Sinners that follows his lead. He becomes a sort of a coach / manager for this team, but he has no damn idea why anyway, conveniently sharing the same confusion he has with the players.
All I can think of is that the premise is a darker, more twisted 2D version of a Persona game. The game is fully voiced in the Korean language but thankfully there are English subtitles.
The entirety of Limbus Company comprises a linear progression system through various levels inside chapters, back and forth-ing between visual novel-esque cutscenes that advance the story, or battles that you have to complete to unlock the next level.
The end of the chapters culminates in a mini dungeon-crawler experience that presents the players with more battles to conquer. Ofcourse, the main loop here is to level up your characters and learn more of how the mechanics work, in order to beat higher levels and advance the story.
Before the start of the battle, players will select up to five members to bring to the fight. This aspect is also important to the strategy, as this can heavily make or break your success. However, during the first few parts of the story, I found no attachment whatsoever to the characters nor did I find any difference between them power and skill wise.
There is a time-currency energy aspect that limits your ability to enter battles, and you have to wait out real-world time in order to replenish this currency. However during the first few bits of the game, I’ve had more than plenty of currency to play continuously without it being a show-stopper.
Of course, in time, this will probably be a huge limiting factor in the later parts of the story. There are gacha elements, but they mostly serve as additional flavor to the characters and not really a soft requirement in order to progress. Although again, in eventual later chapters, this might change and become a necessity.
You can’t really binge this game from start to end
With its gacha and live service elements, Limbus Company is a game that is designed to be played for a long time — for small bits at a time — not for a weekend, not for a month, but for months up to years of occasional checking in. Currently, the game is only playable up to Chapter 3, with further chapters to be added in the future as part of a live service offering. There is a bit of replayability in the form of mirror dungeons, which are playable up to once a day.
Conclusion:
Its overwhelming gameplay concepts, incomplete story, play-limiting live service elements, and gacha elements is what stops this game from being a great story-rich RPG game overall. Still, Limbus Company is a game worth a shot since it’s just a free-to-play title, especially for turn-based RPG fans looking for a unique experience.
