Limbus Company is the latest title from Project Moon, the creators of games like Library of Ruina and Lobotomy Corporation. As a newcomer to the cult favorite studio, starting this game felt like diving into the deep end. Even though I was occasionally baffled by Limbus Company, I really enjoyed my time in its mysterious world.
Even though Limbus Company is a turn-based strategy game, I spent a good chunk of my first hour or two with the game reading through story segments. There was actually so much dialogue that I thought the title might be a visual novel with light gameplay elements. While there's a bigger focus on combat later on, the story and characters continue to be a major part of the game.
The core gameplay is simple on the surface, but it's brimming with depth. At the start of each stage, you'll build your team. Once combat starts, you'll chain together skills on your dashboard and attack your opponent. Chaining together skills of the same color and targeting enemy weaknesses will boost your chances of winning a clash.
There are some gacha elements here, but they never got in the way of my playthrough. During the first three chapters, I was able to build effective teams without spending any money.
Fans of Project Moon have probably picked up Limbus Company already, but if you're new to this studio, and you don't mind some weirdness, I'd recommend giving it a try. From the addictive strategic gameplay to the strange characters and story, this is definitely a title that stands out!
