GnollHack PROS and CONS. Is it Good?

GnollHack is a roguelike RPS game with very complex and deep mechanics, a lot of players will love it for that. But it have some drawbacks too.

In this article we will talk about both good and bad sides of GnollHack so you can decide if this is the right game for you.

PROS

1. Gameplay

GnollHack is a pretty classical roguelike, where you dont have any progression between runs. You just enter the procedurally generated dungeon with selected preset and go from there. Random enemies, random loot, random events. All that gives a lot of replayability value and a lot to research and explore.

2. Multiple characters

You can select one of 13 roles , each with unique starting conditions, story, goals, looks and gameplay. Adjust the difficulty from 10% to 318% and go on adventure. From here your gameplay options are endless: learn spells, master weapons, explore and progress at your own pace.

3. DnD Damage calculations

GnollHack features DnD mechanics, so instead of 24-78 damage you will see 1d3, 1d6 and so on with modifiers to your gear, armor, enchantment levels etc. This is a nice touch that will allow GnollHack to stand out from most games that are out there.

4. 100% offline

You dont need internet connection to play the GnollHack, which makes it perfect for long trips, use in the subway or in the areas with bad internet coverage.

CONS

1. Complicated UI

This is probably the most serious issue GnollHack have. have 3 screens of different buttons in the menu, and bunch of them on the screen. On the tablet it looks ok, on the phone in portrait mode its not that bad either, but playing it on the phone in landscape mode is very hard because of all this clutter. Looting is slow too, sadly.

2. Steep learning curve

Game is VERY COMPLEX. Its actually a good thing, but might scare off new players, especially the casual ones, who are used to be hendheld on their playthrough. It will take some time to understand how game works, what each stat means and how to improve it.

3. Lack of long term progression

Sadly when you die there isnt much you can carry to your next playthrough. Yes, its pure roguelike, but in modern age, some sort of long term progression is necessary to keep players interested.

Verdict. Is GnollHack Good?

Yes!

GnollHack is a fantastic Roguelike with that oldschool vibe and really deep and complex gameplay mechanics. If you will be able to figure out how the game works and how to properly play it you will get at least 50 hours of fun gameplay and adventures.
