DEV BLOG #6 - Online Matchmaking

Hello players,

In our past dev blogs, we have focused mainly on designs related to single player content. Today, let's switch to the topic of multiplayer and talk about the online 1v1 of TABS Mobile!

TABS Multiplayer is where you meet unexpected hilarity and joy on battlefields against other players - In the original PC version, players can engage in 1v1 online battles through 3 modes: Local, Friends and Quick Match.

Considering the inconvenience of achieving local split-screen battles where two players have to click and swipe on one small mobile screen, we shifted our focus to prioritize online multiplayer development. In today’s sharing, we will jump into how we design the online multiplayer mode which is still under development with a range of new features including match lobby, friends system, and text chat function to cater to mobile players’ needs.

Match Lobby

In the original PC version, without an online lobby, players randomly match with available rooms by choosing Quick Match - if the system finds no other players ready to match with you after searching for battles, you then will become the host and create your own online room.

Given that battles are generally short in TABS, we are designing a Match Lobby for the mobile version to make it easier matching with different opponents.

Within the lobby, players can choose to join a battle by clicking “Quick Match" , or, directly create their own room. You can customize the room name and password, select the map, limit the factions that both players cannot use, and set the rules of the battle.

After creating your room, other online players in the lobby can view your room info on the room list by clicking ‘Refresh’, or you can also join a room by searching for the room number.

Friends System

In the joyful arena of TABS, nothing beats the thrill of exhilarating battles against your besties! In the PC Steam version, players can invite their online Steam friends to join the battle, while in our pocket edition under development, the host can simply click the plus sign on the opponent's avatar to invite their listed friends to partake in the game.

Mobile version will also bring a new feature that allows players to add friends within the game. You can click on your opponent's avatar to send a request directly, or add by searching for your friend's ID.

By developing our online match lobby that brings a organized overview of the room list and a revamped friend system, we aim to offer mobile gamers a smooth and user-friendly experience for multiplayer matchmaking. And for the upcoming blogs, we will delve into the different functions in actual online battles, please keep your eyes peeled!
