Play it. If you’re an avid League of Legends player like me or someone that just wants to go on an enchanting journey, The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story will satisfy you. It’s a wonderful action RPG with a gorgeous 2D pixel art style and a rich, compelling narrative that should draw in anyone that’s interested in revenge, adventures, and magic.

TIME PLAYED

I played The Mageseeker for eight hours and managed to get pretty far. The Mageseeker follows League of Legends champion Sylas, who’s building a band of rebels and recruiting all the powerful mages while trying to acquire greater power. I’ve completed around eight side and main missions, as well as the prologue.

WHAT’S AWESOME

• Combat. It’s hard not to be impressed when a game does combat so impeccably well, and The Mageseeker left me itching for more fights. If you’ve played Hades before, The Mageseeker will feel similar in its fast-paced, electric combat that’s viewed from an isometric perspective. Add in spells, combos, and ultimate abilities, and combat can be really invigorating and exciting in the heat of battle.

• Difficulty. The Mageseeker challenged me, but not in a terribly overpowering way. The game’s enemies always offered a tough fight, whether in the form of a mob of soldiers, a massive head that could use magic, or other fantastical foes. There was always a new exhilarating and stimulating encounter to test me and keep me on my toes.

• Narrative. The Mageseeker’s story is beautifully told through well-written dialogue and pixel-art cutscenes. The story explores Sylas’s rise to glory and revenge as he escapes from Demacia, seeking to free mages from the tyranny and torture of the kingdom that once held him captive. Even though I’ve heard Sylas’s story many times before, experiencing it through The Mageseeker felt more immersive and enchanting than any lore I’ve read online. The game’s banter, suspense, and grim tone have kept me captivated.

• No prior experience needed. You don’t need to play League of Legends if you want to understand and enjoy The Mageseeker. The game focuses heavily on lore and key characters in the League of Legends universe, but it sets up its narrative so that even newer players, or ones that have never played at all, can fully and wholeheartedly relish The Mageseeker in all of its glory.

• League of Legends lore. If you’re already a League of Legends fan, then prepare for a ton of hidden lore scattered everywhere. There are tidbits of backstory nestled into different areas, dialogue, and even in the main story cutscenes which is cool to see. Heck, if you’ve played Teamfight Tactics as much as I have, you’ll even get to see some of the cool little flying pets around too!

• Music. As much as the narrative paints the picture, it wouldn’t be as charming without the background music setting the canvas. It’s the pièce de résistance that brings the entire exquisite story together, especially considering that The Mageseeker has no voice acting.

• Pixel art. The Mageseeker’s visual style looks absolutely stunning. The 2D pixel art looks brilliant on characters like Sylas and Morgana and really brings The Mageseeker to life thanks to the game’s masterful shading and coloring.

WHAT SUCKS

• No voice acting. There’s no voice acting in The Mageseeker, and it feels like such a missed opportunity. Using the already iconic voices behind characters like Sylas, Garen, and Morgana would have made this an even more immersive and compelling experience.

• Minor bugs. I encountered a glitch while playing The Mageseeker where I sometimes dashed through walls or right at a cliff and got stuck. Thankfully I was able to free myself by spamming the dash button, but these moments were a little annoying.
