Hello again! Today, we’re covering the creation and design process of the Arenas in Flash Party, where all the action happens.
Choosing the Arena Themes
First, let’s talk about our source of inspiration for the Arenas you will fight in. It took us a long time to find a suitable theme without forgoing the essence of the game, but after tons of changes and scrapped ideas, we finally settled on the theme of designing Arenas around each hero.
All of us feel this is the right choice as we invested a great amount of time and emotion into the characters. Therefore, paying tribute to their personalities and life stories tie very well with the flavor of the game. As development progresses, you’ll see more scenes tie into the lives and experiences of the heroes. As always, feel free to suggest ideas by commenting below!
Arena 1: From Sketch to Color
While developing and testing the first Arena for Flash Party, we first released it in simple, monochrome sketches so that early testers could experience the game first and provide feedback on the look and feel. This way, we were able to constantly tweak the Arena based on your comments, rather than design it solely around our imagination. Once we were satisfied with the make-up of the environment, we went on to adjust the finer details, such as color saturation and texturing objects to look more realistic. So far, the approach has worked well, so we will likely continue working this way for future Arenas before publishing their final versions.
The Arena pictured above is based on one of the characters, Sivi. It combines his qualities as an inventor, fighter and gaming nerd while also conveying his character as an ill-tempered genius who has better things to do than clean up his space. Looking around this Arena, you’ll notice a variety of elements, such as a gaming controller, Rubik's cube, Gameboy, and even a pair of boxing gloves lying in the corner.
To highlight the fact that Sivi is an inventor, we also pasted a photo of his idol, Albert Einstein, on his notice board. The poster next to it is a creation of Sivi’s character designer, and we wanted to add it in to give the environment a more personal touch.
Feedback about the Map Design
The main gripe that players had about this design was that there are too many elements in the scene, which distracted them from the main gameplay. Therefore, we have improved on later versions to balance graphics, performance, and gameplay.
We can’t wait to share more with you on the ongoing development of Flash Party, especially about the heroes and how they have been fine-tuned over the months. This is a title that’s close to our hearts, and we want to make sure we get it right and craft a platform fighting game that you can have a great time playing with your friends.
