Tavern Brawl is a TCG style Auto Chess battler game that took a lot of heavy influence from games like HearthStone for it's art design. It even asks you at the beginning of the game if you have ever played hearthstone to see if you're somewhat familiar with the game style. The gameplay of Tavern brawl is very simple. Every round before you enter combat you can buy some card units to take into battle.
Each card costs 3 gold and different races have different bonuses if played together. So for example if you begin an elf deck for combat, it's better to stick with an elf deck because your extra elf units can bolster the damage and health of their allies. After a few rounds you can also upgrade the store, allowing you to have upgraded cards to use in your deck. And if you get triples of the same type you can also upgrade them. You can also freeze cards for the next turn if you have the possibility of a three card upgrade but you can't afford it yet.
In that situation it's best to freeze your shop cards for the next round, then you can buy the upgrade card to enhance your deck. This is the most engaging part of the game since the combat is done in auto mode so you just have to sit there and watch. When you win 5 rounds or die, the match is over. When you win a match you earn upgrade potions for a specific card which you can then upgrade from the main screen. There are also 2 modes of gameplay available to you, the standard matches and arena. Arena is available once you hit silver rank. Visually the game is very simple.
There isn't much in terms of graphical complexity in this game. There is no 3D models in this game, and the card combat is very simple, with no big special effects with the combat spells when fighting. It's all very simple. The art work is nice however. The audio is also very simple. The only audio you have is in the music. There is no sound effects when in combat. No impact sounds when attacking or spell sound effects either. There is absolutely zero sound effects whatsoever. The only thing present is the tavern style music. Making the combat part to feel very lackluster and frankly very boring. Sound effects are quite an important part of any game, and this would have been so much better with some combat sound effects.
Overall I'd say that Tavern Brawl is a very simplistic auto chess game with heavy influences from HearthStone. The shop part is the only truly interesting part of the game. Upgrading your cards, and trying to get the best team composition, but that's all that interested me. The combat was so boring that I'd just put my phone down during that phase and do something else until it was the next round. While the game isn't terrible, it really does need some combat sound effects to at least give that auto section something interesting.
