Project Sekai: Index vs Thumb (Phone)

Project Sekai: Index vs Thumb (Phone)

Rhythm games, always a stubborn thing. Especially mobile ones, am I right? Okay, but seriously, thumbs? How would you use thumbs on a tablet? That’s pretty stupid. But what about using a phone, a device where it’s relatively small to carry. Should you keep using your index fingers here, or just maybe, is it better to use your thumbs instead?

The game I’ll be talking about will be Project Sekai, but this can apply to many of the rhythm games you’ll find on mobile. With that out of the way, let’s compare the two!

An index play style is one where you hover both of your hands over your phone, which is laying down on a table. Preferably, the table is higher than the bottom of the chair you are sitting on. This play style provides you with a lot of room, making it easier to swap between multiple notes. One huge problem with this play style is how much your other fingers get in the way of the screen. If your constantly moving around, and you have a high speed set to your notes, you may accidentally have your fingers block a note or a flick note, which is not ideal. Also, I found that when playing with an index style, both of my hand’s pinky and ring finger would slowly drift together, which is somewhat painful when you’re not multifingering, because those fingers have nowhere to be placed, unlike on a keyboard.
A thumb play style is the same as you would play any other normal game on your phone. Holding the phone in a landscape position, your thumbs (and only your thumbs, except for the index fingers which I’ll get to in a second) have room to hit the notes without fear of any notes being hidden away. Plus, you’ll never suffer that pinky + ring finger issue because they both have a place to stay now, behind the phone. However, unless you’ve got some quick thumbs, this play style suffers from the slowness of your thumbs, so if you choose a song like “The End of Hatsune Miku” or “The EmpErroR” on expert or master, you may have difficulties trying to play the high burst of notes that come at you.

There’s one more thing I wanted to talk about, and it’s about the reliability of flicks. Ever tried to flick and it just didn’t go through? Well, in my experience, I’ve found the index play style is more likely to fail flicks, but that’s not to say that the thumb style isn’t prone to failing flicks either.

So which one do I use? I swap between both, depending on the song, difficulty, and how I’m feeling, but if I have to choose a definite answer, it would be the index play style.
However, I’m sure you guys have different reasons for your preferred play style! This is purely my opinion, and is not based in fact. So have fun with it, and try to find something that works for you!

Very impressive for a rhythm game on a phone One of those rhythm games that is just extremely fluid, with little setup required, little sound effect lag, and an overall very seamless experience, is Project SEKAI. One of the rhythm games I've played that I've most enjoyed playing is this one.

Rotaeno Review: A Rotation Revolution
We've all had a beat stuck in our heads that stayed with us the entire day. At best, we forgot it after a few hours without annoying too many people with our incessant humming, and at worst, we got caught busting a move right when we thought no one was looking! It's no wonder that this human behavior was captured and turned into a genre of entertainment known as rhythm games. With the success of titles like
