Have you ever wondered how the Flash Party heroes were created?
In general, we start by conceptualizing the hero and then bounce ideas off one another to develop and enrich its background story. At the same time, we’re always adjusting the hero’s visual style to the stage setting to avoid clashes in style, color, etc. As the hero is becoming a complete character from a simple concept through time, their appearance and skills are adjusted accordingly - to the extent that the final version is completely different from the original.
Once we finalize a hero concept, we’ll pass it on to our colleagues in planning and they will typically draft a basic character structure first before deciding on the hero style and gameplay. During this time, they often choose a general direction of their skill development and then figure out their skills in detail from there. For instance, you will find that our existing heroes have unique skills or ‘mechanisms’. There’s Snow White’s popsicle bat that boasts excellent attack range and instant counterattack, Yeti’s powerful bashing that stuns opponents, Sivi’s dashes that deal high damage, the Great Magician’s statue that sets terrain traps, and Cupid’s long-range arrow attack. Every hero’s skills are tailored carefully and not simply cool ideas we thought of on a whim. There are also more things for the dev team to consider, such as the interplay between different skills and balancing them against each other. As more heroes get added to the pool, balancing their abilities with existing heroes will become more challenging and meticulous. All in all, making this a fun party game, and not so much a super-serious competitive game, is the most important theme we keep going back to. We want you guys to have a roaring good time playing Flash Party with your friends, because friendship comes first, and competition second! That is why we designed the game with lighthearted elements, such as Yeti’s snowball roll and Cupid’s electric music arrow, rather than grittier, darker elements that may hold negative connotations.
That’s all from us today, and we hope you enjoyed this developer’s insight into Flash Party’s hero design!
Till next time,
XD
