Ruins Story is a 2D action shooter played in a vertical format. You will move aim and shoot at high speeds. There are 2 different weapons for attacking which are done by either tapping or sliding your finger. The game is supposed to be easy to play with simple controls, but I found it difficult. The tutorial I felt was poorly done because I was often confused about what I was even supposed to do or what was going on. At one point I didn't even know that I was in the menu to select my next mission. The UI of the game is just horrible, and you often have no idea where things are or what things do.
It often feels like there is just random shapes and objects all over the place with no explanation. There is a skill tree system with some RPG elements but even that is confusing as all you see are pictures of objects with no words. When you do see words like during the story dialogue it can be hard to depict certain letters because of the font style and old style of graphics used. It took me quite a while to even understand how the controls worked before it felt "kind of" fun. I imagine after you play for several days or weeks it becomes fun once you understand what is even going on, but for a new player to the game like me... it was just confusing and not fun.
As you see in the screenshots of the game, everything is just objects and symbols with no words. There is a cash shop which lets you spend real money to buy the premium currency. The game features several different currencies you need to micromanage as well. Overall, I just didn't enjoy the game at all. Some people may enjoy it but for me its a hard pass.
