I had the pleasure of trying out Strike Buster Prototype before it's official release on August 9th 2023, and this game is pretty fun. Strike Buster Prototype is a fast paced roguelite bullet hell game with an anime aesthetic. While the gameplay is fairly straight forwards, there are a few modes available in this game. The main one you will be trying is Endless mode. In Endless mode you just fight as long and hard as you can, building up your high score and accumulating gold for upgrades. Then there's Boss Rush, Boss Rush is basically where you just focus on defeating the bosses. in Hardcore you have to fight off the enemies while the battlefield starts shrinking,
Asteroid is just as it sounds, you have to face off against the enemies while also dealing with a meteor shower at the same time. And then there's a custom game where you can set the survival time, boss kills and coins. You can also choose from a variety of weapons before a match begins, as long as you have any new weapons to choose from. And you can also apply relics to your game if you manage to find any. During a match you can also get supply chests of different ranking, there are rank C, B and A supply trophy boxes. I did manage to get 1 relic from an A rank supply chest earlier. And a couple weapons from C rank boxes.
The gameplay itself is fast and intense. With your character zipping around the screen, trying to take down as many enemies within the time frame allocated. You can swap between your three weapons as often as you can. If you survive long enough to reach 0 on the timer, you will then have to deal with a boss. These bosses are pretty tough and I only managed to take down one boss during my time playing the game, every other time I was killed pretty easily. This is mainly because I'm not very good at bullet hell games, and have trouble keeping track of all the shots being thrown at me. However I still had fun with the game.
There are 3 other characters to choose from, however they are locked behind in game purchases, though they aren't expensive to unlock. When you do die in the game, you will be prompted with the choice of watching an ad, or starting again. And while it is somewhat annoying to watch an ad to continue playing, it's much better that they give you the choice, rather than getting ads forced on you after every death like in some free games I've played in the past. So I'd much rather have the choice to watch an ad to continue my game, Visually I love the pixel art and the character art looks great for your default character, I couldn't see what the other 3 characters look like however, since there icons are blacked out until you purchase them.
The combat animations and colors are great, they're bright and punchy and everything is super fun to look at while playing. The audio of the game is great too, with it's funky soundtrack, and the impactful combat sound effects, the game has some great audio that compliments the game completely. I enjoyed the combat sound effects a lot. They really felt like they belonged and were hard hitting. Overall I'd say that Strike Buster Prototype is a super fun roguelite bullet hell pixel art game that I'm sure fans of this genre will enjoy. While the game does have ads, they do give you the right to choose if you want to watch them or not in order to progress your game or start over. And the in game purchases for the other characters is very cheap as well. There are a good amount of modes to keep you entertained as well and I think it's just an overall fun experience. I definitely recommend this game for those who enjoy these types of game genres.
