It's almost unthinkable that Throne and Liberty was once considered to be one of the most anticipated MMORPGs in the last decade. Back when it was originally revealed as Lineage Eternal. Back when they announced their conversion to Project TL.
NCSoft have developed and published some of the most iconic MMORPGs in the entire history of the genre. The Lineage franchise - disregarding the Lineage mobile MMOs even despite their monolithic success. Aion - disregarding the Aion mobile MMO. Blade & Soul - disregarding the Blade & Soul mobile MMOs. Even Guild Wars 2 - under ArenaNet.
The studio name wasn't necessarily synonymous with the term "quality," but they had some of the most fun, challenging titles of the last 2 decades.
Thus, when they announced Throne & Liberty would be launching alongside Lost Ark many years ago - as Lineage Eternal, players were ecestatic. It was essentially Lost Ark with a Lineage theme.
And while they've undergone numerous alterations and had somewhat of an identity crisis, when we were finally presented with the first, and subsequent, full gameplay trailers, we held some hope. That NCSoft had retained a little competence. That they were still capable of releasing a quality title.
Then we saw real gameplay - taken from several creators that obtained access to a test build, and it looked bad. Auto-play plagued the game, the UI was artocious, and the game felt like an auto-path, auto-combat mobile MMO.
Absolutely distraught, players took to social media to berate NCSoft, claiming this was absolute garbage and we as a community refuse to accept this. But NCSoft and Amazon Game Studios, had already revealed a release date for 2023.
Which, recently, got pushed back into 2024 Globally so they could make further alterations to the game in an active effort to appease the angry mob outside their studio.
But are these alterations enough? Or is it too late to win back the good opinion of the playerbase? That's what we're here today to find out. Exactly what they're changing, and when we'll be able to see those changes in action.
