The open-world adventure game Wuthering Wave revealed a new scenic PV at TGS, primarily showcasing the day and night changes in the wilderness, rivers, and the city, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
For an open-world game, the freedom to explore is indeed a crucial aspect of the gaming experience. Many players have drawn comparisons between "Wuthering Wave" and "Genshin Impact," considering them both open-world games with engaging combat experiences and a distinct anime art style. In April of this year, "Wuthering Wave" conducted a closed beta test aimed at its core player base, and based on the performance during this test, it may still have some way to go to reach its ideal goals.
Let's talk about the combat aspect of the game, which is also the most enjoyable part for me throughout the entire game.
The combat experience in "Wuthering Wave" can be described as "smooth" and "elegant." Players can assemble a team of three characters for battles, with each character having three innate skills and one customizable skill. During battles, you can accumulate "Harmony Points" continuously, triggering special Harmony Effects. There are five types of Harmony Effects, which can be divided into three main categories: area control, increased basic attack damage, and area damage. Compared to the common fast-switching gameplay, the combat system in "Wuthering Wave" seems to encourage "allowing each character to have a longer presence on the battlefield."
When it comes to the other aspects of the open world in "Wuthering Wave," there are two main directions for content expansion: introducing new maps and telling new stories (introducing new characters).
Regarding the theme, "Wuthering Wave" takes the direction of "post-apocalyptic science fiction," which is a genre the development team is skilled at. Additionally, it incorporates numerous elements of traditional culture. The collision of these two aspects results in some fresh visual expressions. For instance, the main city draws inspiration from Hui-style architecture and has maintained its distinctive identity since 2021.
In terms of the storyline, it's the biggest shortcoming of this testing phase. For the average player, the settings might not be memorable. What sticks in players' minds are the specific stories, characters, and the "character development" that weaves the story and characters together.
Based on our experience, there is still a lot of room for improvement. The most noticeable issue is the interaction between Chixia and the protagonist. Before hearing the bell, Chixia says, "I'll cover you!" But after hearing the bell, she suddenly changes and says, "You know nothing! You know absolutely nothing!" Indeed, I had only played for a little over two hours, and I didn't know much about Wuthering Wave. Of course, it's easy to rewrite the storyline in a testing version, but we hope that the next time we encounter such a dramatic change, it won't feel so abrupt and disjointed.
as excited as i am for wuwa I honestly don't care how long it takes to release anymore, I want kuro to take as much time as they need to make sure we get a great launch
