The Character Design of Alice

The Character Design of Alice

Hello again, Party players!
With the recent release of our latest hero Alice, we thought you might be curious as to how we designed her.
Since the beginning of Alice’s design, we were already quite certain on creating a dual hero concept of a little girl and her guardian. However, this posed its own set of challenges during conceptualization - how could we create a hero who’s one of the shiniest stars of the party, and yet have her take a passive role in battles? Some of us thought of adding a pet that players can summon to fight on her behalf, or replicate her body to form a conscious doppelgänger who protects her like a guardian angel while she sleeps.

During our exploration, we experimented with two ideas for the design of Alice’s protector, namely rabbit gloves and the Cheshire Cat from Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. After finishing a number of early sketches, we unanimously agreed that the most interesting design is the middle girl pictured above, and so we ventured into the theme of ‘sleep’ to refine her design further. We then designed Alice to be a young child, at an age where kids nap a lot – think of the children in kindergarten, who often have to be gently coaxed for their hour-long naps!

Visually, we hope that players are able to make an instant connection between our Alice and the girl from the fairy tale the moment they see her. While there are some unmistakable cues in her character design, we also added our own artistic twists to give her more personality. For example, when you’re in the lobby selecting heroes or waiting for a match, the huge glove behind Alice will mimic the ears of a rabbit. This essentially pays tribute to the White Rabbit from the fairy tale.
Think of the glove as Alice’s little friend from her imagination - one who is not just her playmate but a loyal protector while she dreams of candy and prancing unicorns. In reality, Alice often sleepwalks her way into dangerous situations, and the Flash Party stage is one of those instances where she’s exposed and needs a guiding hand to keep her safe.

(The rabbit glove always points Alice in the right direction when she has no idea where to go.)
To show that the White Glove is in charge of Alice’s battles, we increased its size so that it can assume different forms, such as a rabbit, a weapon, and certain finger movements. At the same time, it can also catch and hold Alice gently to prevent her from getting hurt, especially when opponents send her flying! By giving the White Glove such a crucial function, it’s fair to say that it is pretty much a natural extension of the little girl.

Our design team especially love Alice as she's such a sweet-looking girl, and so worked tirelessly on this hero and came up with lots of illustrations before finalizing on the child hero you see in-game today. Now that you’ve officially met her, let us know your thoughts on this adorable little hero too!
Till next time,
XD
