I love gaming my whole life just about from my first system the intellvision all the way up to the ps2. But then came the Internet and gaming from what I had know all those single player games had gone and with it the originality those games had. As the internet Gameplay became more and more part of the gaming world it seem all the games that where coming out where multiplayer games where you compete for ranks and numbers. From that just came a world where games just began to feel all the same.
I mean rather it is Call Of Duty or Overwatched they are basically the same game with tweaks here or there but the goals the same be last one standing, get the most kills, capture the flag, or whatever other game modes are common to fps games online. It just felt like the same game with different aesthetics. This trend of same basic gameplay different graphics didn't just stay with the fps online it seemed to bleed into every gaming genre. Like what is considered a new game now when played just feels like a reskined version of a game that came before it. Almost like a genre of games now is just taking someone else game and redoing it enough so you can call it a new game. Not like in the old days where if two games shared the same genre they may have had some similarities in game play to qualify them for that particular genre but they had enough of their own personality that they felt like their own game and not an a carbon copy of another game.
Truly original games seem to be a lost art in the world of video games. Putting love and effort also seem to a thing of the past too. Because major developers and a lot smaller go for the trends and go for what will produce the most cash instead of the love of game making and making games that feel like an individual not part of a herd.
Originality seems to be a dying art but it is not all the game developers fault either. Because we vote and encourage trends in the gaming industry with our cash. Sadly a lot of people are voting for this new age of unoriginality and carbon copy games. Game developers are a business and the goal of any business is to make money. So it stands to reason they will continue to pump out what will bring the greatest cash flow. They will not stray too far from what is working.
So then maybe the problem are people like me who are becoming old fossils in the gaming world trying to hold on to a past that is gone and just accepting the way it is now. But as an old fossil I still hold out and keep my eyes out for those games like the ones I remember playing as a kid games with their personalities and feel like their own game. now it is usually the smaller Indie game makers that make them and Nintendo which I think out of the major game studios is the closest we have to what gaming was like when thought love where actually put into games. In fact they stayed pretty true to that old school formula since they revived gaming in the US back in the 80s.
So a big Thank you to all the game makers and devs that continue to look outside trends and cash grabs and make the games you want to make because you are the ones still keeping my love of gaming alive and my hope that my era of video gaming is not completely gone. There is still hope for gaming.
Try indie games then
