Cat Painter is a 2018 casual Japanese painting game developed by Nukenin.
Before continuing, I'd like to add that despite still being available for download, the game's service was terminated on March 31th, so unfortunately you can no longer play it.
That means this is yet another review for a dead cat game no one cares about (Although technically, you can still play Super Phantom Cat, with a lot of emphasis on technically).
❖ Gameplay:
This is both an art guessing game and a competitive painting game. Think of it as a mix of Passpartout and Pictionary.
You'd be presented with your 'apurrentices', who would hand you drawings made by other players for you to guess and rate based on their artistic skill. This is how you gathered inspiration — The fuel needed to create your own paintings.
Once you gather enough of it, you could choose a theme from a randomly generated list of three words and make a drawing based on it for other people to guess.
You can see how these mechanics look on this same store's page.
You could send your best paintings to contests, and if you did well enough, they'd show up in your personal Hall of Fame and/or the contest winner screen for the whole world to see.*
*Regional restrictions apply.
❖ Presentation:
There's not much that can be said. The visuals are simple yet pleasing. The sound design has nothing worth mentioning. Just plain casual game things.
❖ Customization:
The customization wasn't that big of a deal. You could buy a few upgrades and decorations with the game's currency. The upgrades would help you along the way at least.
❖ Conclusion:
A game I would recommend to death if it wasn't already dead.
Despite it's simplicity —and maybe because of it— it was quite fun. Maybe one of these days there will be a spiritual successor so that people may experience this great concept on mobile again.
I decided to write this article in celebration of a certain cat-related gamelist reaching 50+ games.
Opinions on this review would be appreciated.
